job summary

to safely transport students, staff, and authorized passengers to and from extracurricular activities, athletic events, field trips, and other district-sponsored functions in accordance with district policies and transportation regulations.

qualifications
  • high school diploma or ged preferred.
  • valid new mexico commercial driver’s license (cdl), class b or higher, with passenger (p) and school bus (s) endorsements, or the ability to obtain required endorsements within district-established timelines.
  • valid dot medical examiner's certificate, or ability to obtain one upon hire and maintain certification.
  • current first aid and cpr certification, or ability to obtain certification within district-established timelines.
  • ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and overnight trips when required.
essential duties and responsibilities transportation operations
  • safely transport students, staff, and authorized passengers to and from district-sponsored activities.
  • operate assigned vehicles in compliance with all federal, state, local, and district transportation regulations.
  • conduct required pre-trip and post-trip inspections and report vehicle deficiencies promptly.
  • maintain assigned schedules while prioritizing passenger safety.
  • follow approved travel routes and itineraries unless otherwise directed.
  • ensure no passenger is left unattended on a district vehicle.
student safety and supervision
  • maintain a safe and orderly environment during transportation.
  • communicate transportation expectations and safety requirements to passengers.
  • report accidents, incidents, injuries, disciplinary concerns, or unusual occurrences according to district procedures.
  • assist with emergency evacuations and emergency response procedures when necessary.
documentation and reporting
  • maintain accurate trip logs, mileage records, inspection reports, and required transportation documentation.
  • submit required reports and records in a timely manner.
  • communicate delays, route changes, emergencies, or operational concerns to the transportation department.
vehicle care
  • maintain a clean and orderly vehicle interior.
  • monitor fuel levels and report maintenance concerns.
  • ensure assigned vehicles are secured when not in use.
professional responsibilities
  • maintain professional conduct and positive relationships with students, staff, parents, coaches, sponsors, and community members.
  • attend required safety meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities.
  • comply with district policies, procedures, and transportation guidelines.
  • perform other transportation-related duties as assigned by the transportation director or designee.
knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • knowledge of safe school bus operation and defensive driving practices.
  • ability to read maps, follow directions, and navigate unfamiliar locations.
  • ability to exercise sound judgment and remain calm during emergencies.
  • ability to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders.
  • ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
physical requirements
  • ability to sit for extended periods while operating a vehicle.
  • ability to bend, stoop, kneel, climb, and perform vehicle inspections.
  • ability to lift, move, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.
  • ability to assist passengers and respond during emergency situations.
  • ability to meet all physical requirements necessary to maintain cdl certification.
work environment
  • work is performed inside and outside a vehicle environment.
  • exposure to varying weather conditions, traffic conditions, noise, and vehicle vibrations.
  • frequent evening, weekend, and occasional overnight travel may be required.
