Job Description – Assistant Principal

Reports to: Principal

FLSA Status: Exempt

Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree or higher, with certification in education administration.
  • At least three (3) years of successful experience as a classroom teacher at the appropriate level
  • A valid Alabama teacher’s certificate in the field of school administration
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require
  • Applicant must also produce a current TB skin test
Performance Responsibilities

SCHOOL MANAGEMENT

  • Assists in the general administration of the school and serves as principal when the principal is absent
  • Operates the school according to the policies established by the principal, superintendent, and the Board.
  • Participates in the preparation of the annual budget.
  • Assists in preparing district, state, and county reports.
  • Has the responsibility for orientation of substitutes and assigning them as the situation demands.
  • Assists the principal in scheduling and managing school activity programs.
  • Provides assistance for designing the master schedule for the school.
  • Helps maintain an inventory of all school keys and an inventory of all school property.
  • Assists in supervision of custodial maintenance and cafeteria personnel and originates maintenance requests with the proper authorities.
  • Supervises buses and car traffic for student safety.
  • Performs such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities that the principal may assign.

TEACHING PERSONNEL

  • Participates in the evaluation of teachers.
  • Assists in the preparation of the teacher handbook and other communications.
  • Assists in interviewing and recommending prospective staff members and substitutes.
  • Assists teachers in the improvement of teaching techniques after an assessment of teaching methods.
  • Develops a plan for teacher observation and maintains an accurate record of the observation providing an opportunity for teacher reaction.
  • Serves as liaison, when necessary, between individual teachers and the school principal.
  • Maintains an “open door” policy to all teaching personnel.

STUDENT PERSONNEL

  • Assists those who are responsible for school discipline.
  • Makes disciplinary judgments for students, assigns school detention, or takes other appropriate measures.
  • Establishes a system for keeping detailed records of discipline problems.
  • Assists in the development of the student activities program and is responsible for securing sponsors and supervising the financial aspects of the program.
  • Provides help for guidance functions relating to counseling, testing, college information, etc.
  • Participates in the responsibility for the safety and security of students and all others participating in the educational programs of the school.
  • Schedules time to become known to the students by having visibility in the halls, classrooms, and at school activities.

CURRICULUM

  • Assists chairpersons and teachers in curriculum revision and improvement.
  • Attends departmentalized meetings on a regular basis.
  • Participates in area, district, and other public and professional meetings that concern curriculum improvement.
  • Supervises the mandatory testing programs.
  • Participates in preparation of reports and maintenance of records pertaining to curriculum and instruction.
  • Maintains a constant effort to keep aware of curriculum innovations that surface in areas outside the school’s local district.

EXTERNAL RELATIONS

  • Establishes liaison with community agencies (not school financed) that are concerned with the health and welfare of citizens.
  • Attempts to develop good working relationships with the law enforcement and judicial personnel. Works cooperatively with the police and probationary officers.
  • Assists with news releases that deal with the school’s operation and establishes a good relationship with the media.
  • Assists with articulation matters concerning other schools in the system.
  • Maintains good relationships with service groups that assist disabled and economically deprived students.
Physical requirements

Employee must occasionally lift, push, pull, carry and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Terms of employment

Twelve-month employee, in accordance with the Board approved salary schedule or contract. Work schedule includes a 40-hour work week, with scheduled days and times up to the supervisor.
