HVAC Tech / Heating Engineer, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Position Summary
Oversees installation and commissioning of HVAC/R systems, including ductwork, control panels, and building pneumatics. Leads diagnostics and troubleshooting of mechanical, electrical, and refrigerant issues across commercial and industrial systems. Implements and monitors preventive maintenance programs to extend equipment life and reduce downtimes. Manages rack systems, walk-ins, reach-ins, and supermarket refrigeration units, ensuring optimal performance and compliance. Uses heavy machinery. Submits required written and electronic information (for example, expense vouchers, weekly summaries, work orders, maintenance logs).
Ensures adherence to OSHA standards and EPA refrigerant handling protocols by supervising field practices and documentation. Conducts inspections and repairs in accordance with federal, state, and local HVAC/R codes, including indoor air quality and cold chain requirements.
- Enter detailed notes in work orders, including before and after photos.
- Reclaim ozone‑depleting refrigerants and maintain compliance with environmental guidelines.
- Lead HVAC/R field teams by coordinating work assignments, mentoring less‑experienced technicians, and managing escalated service issues.
- Provide hands‑on training sessions on safety, control troubleshooting, and system operations at company facilities, off‑site locations, or vendor sites.
- Participate in an on‑call rotation to support business‑critical needs outside of standard business hours.
- Manage refrigerant levels, parts inventory, and vendor relationships to ensure the timely availability of materials.
- Track and order HVAC/R parts, record purchases and usage, and ensure contract compliance with external service providers.
- Coordinate service calls and manage regional/market workloads to meet business priorities and timelines.
- Support the implementation of HVAC/R business solutions by identifying operational needs, monitoring progress, and adapting to organizational changes.
- Lead special projects by collecting data, evaluating new technologies, and recommending improvements.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to develop and refine processes that meet evolving business demands.
- Maintain company vehicles in accordance with company policies and procedures, including safe operation and maintenance documentation.
- Wear company uniform and badge in accordance with company policies and procedures.
The hourly wage range for this position is $35.00 - $70.00. The actual hourly rate will equal or exceed the required minimum wage applicable to the job location. Additional compensation in the form of premiums may be paid in amounts ranging from $0.35 per hour to $3.00 per hour in specific circumstances. Premiums may be based on schedule, facility, season, or specific work performed.
Multiple premiums may apply if applicable criteria are met.
- Option 1: 3 years’ experience in HVAC/grocery rack refrigeration.
- Option 2: 6 years’ experience in HVAC/grocery rack refrigeration and an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.
- Hold and maintain Type I and Type II or Universal Environmental Protection Agency certification for refrigerant handling.
- Where required, HVAC‑R/Mechanical Journeyman.
- 1 year’s experience in plumbing, electrical, material handling equipment, or related area or 2 years’ Walmart store experience.
- Valid state‑issued driver’s license and ability to pass a motor vehicle report.
- Ability to read and speak the English language as required by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
- Commercial driving record with no convictions for DUI, DWI, OUI within the last five (5) years.
- Commercial driving record with no more than two (2) moving violations in the last three (3) years.
- Completion of a 2‑year technical/vocational HVAC/R program or 2‑year associate’s of applied science A/C and refrigeration.
- Experience using word processing, spreadsheet, email, and presentation software (for example, Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- No preventable accidents while operating a commercial motor vehicle in the last three (3) years.
