Job Description

Position Goal
To work closely with one or a few handicapped pupils on a regular basis in an effort to provide them with the physical help and emotional support they need to gain as full benefits from the district's special education program as possible.

Building Principal

Education:

High School diploma.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work with administration, teachers, staff, and students.
  • Act as a liaison between the public and the school, promoting the overall image of the school system.
  • Assist assigned student(s) with physical tasks (e.g., putting on/out of outerwear, moving between rooms, using the lavatory).
  • Help students with recitation, reading, and other curriculum tasks without teaching.
  • Perform errands and tasks such as sharpening pencils, carrying lunch trays.
  • Under supervision of the special education teacher, work with small groups to reinforce material initially introduced.
  • Ace company student(s) on trips to the office or school nurse.
  • Establish supportive, sympathetic relationships with student(s) without fostering intense emotional involvement.
  • Serve as a resource person for the student personnel evaluation team when requested.
  • Supervise students at playtime, maintain a harmonious playground atmosphere.
  • Organize group games and activities, assume responsibility for play equipment.
  • Participate in in-service training program.
  • Direct movement of groups to and from the playground.
  • Administer, score, record achievement and diagnostic tests as recommended.
  • Assist teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material based on an understanding of students' needs and abilities.
  • Operate and care for instructional equipment; help students master assigned equipment.
  • Distribute and collect workbooks, papers, and materials; guide independent, enrichment, and remedial work.
  • Anticipate student needs during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
  • Maintain bulletin boards and other classroom displays.
  • Assist with large group activities such as drill work, reading aloud, story telling.
  • Read to students, listen to students read, participate in oral communication.
  • Assist students in the library or media center.
  • Check notebooks, correct papers, supervise testing and makeup work.
  • Assist with lunch, snack, cleanup routines, wash‑up and toilet routines.
  • Alert regular teacher to student problems or special information.
  • Serve as primary source of information for substitute teachers.
  • Maintain ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information.
Communication, Analytical, Technology, and Physical Demands

Communication Skills
Read and interpret documents (safety rules, lesson plans); write routine reports; communicate professionally.

Analytical and Reasoning Skills
Use common sense to follow instructions; remain flexible to manage any situational changes.

Technology Skills
Operate a personal computer, use standard office applications, email, complete trainings, and enter time-tracking information.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Regular sitting, walking; use hands; occasional standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching; lift up to 50 lbs; adjust focus; environment occasionally loud.

Other duties as assigned by superintendent or designee. Salary and benefits determined by Board. Performance evaluated per Board policy on support services personnel.
