Position GoalTo work closely with one or a few special‑needs students on a regular basis to provide them with the physical help and emotional support needed to benefit fully from the district's special education program.

Education & ExperienceHigh School diploma.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Work with the administration, teachers, staff, and students.
- Act as a liaison between the public and the school, promoting the overall image of the school system.
- Assist students with physical tasks such as putting on and taking off outerwear, moving between rooms, using the lavatory, and other daily activities.
- Help students with recitation, reading, and curriculum tasks, guiding and supporting them without teaching them.
- Perform errands and tasks such as sharpening pencils and carrying lunch trays.
- Under supervision of the special education teacher, work with small groups to reinforce material introduced by the teacher.
- Accompany students on trips to the office or school nurse when necessary.
- Establish a supportive relationship with students without encouraging intense emotional involvement.
- Serve as a resource person for the student personnel evaluation team when requested.
- Supervise students at playtime and maintain a harmonious playground atmosphere.
- Organize group games and activities.
- Assume responsibility for play equipment.
- Participate in in‑service training programs.
- Direct movement of student groups to and from the playground.
- Administer, score, and record achievement and diagnostic tests as recommended.
- Assist with reinforcement of learning for individual students or small groups.
- Help devise special strategies for reinforcing material based on individual students' needs, interests, and abilities.
- Operate and care for classroom instructional equipment.
- Help students master instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
- Distribute and collect workbooks, papers, and other instructional materials.
- Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up by the teacher.
- Assist with supervision during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
- Keep bulletin boards and classroom displays up to date.
- Assist with large‑group activities such as drill work, reading aloud, and storytelling.
- Read to students, listen to students read, and engage in oral communication.
- Assist students in the library or media center.
- Check notebooks, correct papers, supervise testing and make‑up work as assigned.
- Assist with lunch, snack, and cleanup routines.
- Assist with wash‑up and toilet routines.
- Alert the regular teacher to any problems or special information about an individual student.
- Serve as the chief source of information and help for any substitute teacher in the teacher's absence.
- Maintain high ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding student information as expected of licensed teachers.
Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, lesson plans, and classroom materials; write routine reports and correspondence; communicate with coworkers professionally.
Analytical and Reasoning SkillsApply common‑sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form; remain flexible in coping with any arising situation.
Technology SkillsOperate a personal computer, use standard office applications, send e‑mail, complete required trainings, and enter time‑tracking information.
Physical Demands and Work EnvironmentRegular duties include sitting, walking, using hands to finger, handle, feel, and reach. Frequently required to talk or hear. Occasionally must stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, taste, or smell. May lift or move up to 50 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Noise level occasionally loud.
Other Duties as AssignedWill perform other duties assigned by the superintendent or designee as necessary to achieve district goals and objectives.
Terms of EmploymentSalary and benefits to be determined by the Board of Education.
EvaluationPerformance will be evaluated per the Board's policy on evaluation of support services personnel.
