Medical Lab Technician; MLT​/Medical Technologist; MT

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
• Report test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
• Follow established procedures for laboratory quality control and report discrepancies to the Director of Laboratory.
• Perform daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate.
• Perform calibration of equipment as required.
• Troubleshoot instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur. Notify the Director of Laboratory if unable to solve the problem.
• Comply with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures. When handling blood and/or body fluids, universal precaution procedures will be followed to minimize exposure to infectious diseases. Safety policies and procedures will be followed when using chemicals.
• Perform phlebotomy (venipunctures, finger sticks, bleeding times) as appropriate for the patient requiring this procedure.
• Attend all required safety training programs and be able to describe responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job‑related hazards.
• Follow the hospital exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens.
• Demonstrate respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
• Promote effective working relations and work effectively as part of a department/unit team inter‑ and intra‑departmentally to facilitate the department’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Complete annual education requirements.
• Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.

• Maintain regulatory requirements, including all state, federal, and local regulations.

• Attend regular staff meetings and in‑services.

• Associate’s degree in a relevant science preferred.
• MLT (ASCP) or equivalent registration or has completed a technician training program in a school accredited/approved by HHS, or MLT eligible under Medicare laboratory regulations.
• Four months’ clinical laboratory internship preferred.
