Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
- Report test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
- Follow established procedures for laboratory quality control and report discrepancies to the Director of Laboratory.
- Perform daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate.
- Perform calibration of equipment as required.
- Troubleshoot instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur. Notify the Director of Laboratory if unable to solve the problem.
- Comply with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures. When handling blood and/or body fluids, universal precaution procedures will be followed to minimize exposure to infectious diseases. Safety policies and procedures will be followed when using chemicals.
- Perform phlebotomy (venipunctures, finger sticks, bleeding times) as appropriate for the patient requiring this procedure.
- Attend all required safety training programs and be able to describe responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job‑related hazards.
- Follow the hospital exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens.
- Demonstrate respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
- Promote effective working relations and work effectively as part of a department/unit team inter‑ and intra‑departmentally to facilitate the department’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Complete annual education requirements.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- Report to work on time and as scheduled.
- Wear identification while on duty.
- Maintain regulatory requirements, including all state, federal, and local regulations.
- Represent the organization in a positive and professional manner at all times.
- Comply with all organizational policies.
- Conduct oneself as a professional in accordance with PRIDE values.
- Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.
- Attend regular staff meetings and in‑services.
- Associate’s degree in a relevant science preferred.
- MLT (ASCP) or equivalent registration or has completed a technician training program in a school accredited/approved by HHS, or MLT eligible under Medicare laboratory regulations.
- Four months’ clinical laboratory internship preferred.
