Western Iowa Power Cooperative (WIPCO) is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of HVAC Technician/Electrician based out of our Denison, Iowa office. This position is available immediately and will remain open until filled.

WIPCO is a rural electric distribution cooperative serving nearly 3,500 member-owners across West Central Iowa, with approximately 2,100 miles of electric line. We are looking for a motivated individual who is willing to learn, grow in both the HVAC and electrical trades, and support our members with safe, reliable service.

Position Responsibilities
  • Applicant must hold, at a minimum, an HVAC certificate or related Associate of Applied Science degree approved by the State of Iowa to qualify for an Iowa Apprentice HVAC license.
  • Must be enrolled as, or qualified to enroll as, an Iowa HVAC Apprentice at a minimum.
  • HVAC Journeyman or HVAC Master license is preferred.
  • Hired applicant will be required to obtain Journeyman HVAC status while employed by WIPCO.
  • Applicant will also be required to enroll in WIPCO’s Electrician Apprentice Program to work toward obtaining an Iowa Journeyman Electrician license in the future.
  • Class A CDL is required.
  • Applicant must reside within a 30-minute response time radius due to on-call requirements. This role requires availability during all weather conditions, and may include on-call, after-hours, weekend, holiday, and emergency work.
Primary HVAC Duties
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair residential heating and cooling equipment.
  • Service all types of residential heating and cooling systems.
  • Install, repair, and maintain ductwork associated with HVAC systems.
  • Learn and perform work related to electric HVAC equipment in accordance with applicable safety standards and supervision requirements.
Primary Electrical Duties
  • Perform home and farm wiring projects.
  • Assist with electric motor repair, solar installation and repair, and generator installation and repair.
  • Locate electrical faults, including blown fuses, short circuits, broken wires, loose connections, and worn motor brushes.
  • Replace faulty switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, insulators, and other components of electrical systems and fixtures.
  • Install conduit, wire, receptacles, switches, fixtures, and related materials for new construction and remodel projects.
  • Replace lamps and ballast as required.
  • Work from wiring diagrams, schematics, sketches, blueprints, verbal instructions, and written instructions.
  • Estimate materials, time, and labor needed for assigned projects.
Training and Additional Responsibilities

The selected applicant will receive training in overhead and underground wiring, master panels, water heaters, electric motors, lighting, generators, solar systems, and other related duties. WIPCO is willing to train the right individual in these areas.

All applicants will also assist WIPCO’s line crew as needed as a groundman. Following the successful completion of the six-month probationary period, the applicant will be included in on-call responsibilities for outages and service restoration.

Applicants must be able and available to work in all weather conditions and must be willing to work after hours, weekends, holidays, evenings, and other times outside normal duty hours to assist with service restoration or other emergencies. Travel may be required from time to time.

The right applicant will be trained to operate bucket trucks, digger trucks, trenchers, backhoes, and cable plows.

  • Applicants are responsible for providing their own hand tools. Diagnostic tools and tools of the trade will be provided.
Compensation and Benefits

The starting Apprentice HVAC Technician/Electrician rate is $34.59 per hour. This position offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical and dental insurance, 401(k) and retirement package, paid time off, and life and disability insurance.
