As a Highway Technician Senior you will lead the team one day and work alongside them the next, ensuring Iowa highways are safe and maintained. You will contribute to the mission of Making Lives Better Through Transportation and uphold our core values:

Responsibilities

Coordinate work for the team with the supervisor
Respond to emergency situations such as accidents or emergency repairs
Coordinate and/or manage snow operations and operate snow equipment
Perform basic office administration via technical devices and software
Host daily operational meetings and monthly safety huddles with the team
Assist with traffic control maintenance activities
Support internal CDL training efforts

Shift & Location

Shift: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Hours may vary; the position may require on‑call 24 hours a day during emergency and/or weather conditions and overnight travel.

Residency:
Within five (5) months, employees are required to reside within 45 minutes driving time from the assigned work location (Denison Maintenance Garage).

Special Requirements

Hold a CDL permit upon hire and obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License with required endorsements and restrictions within 5 months
Success a U.S. DOT Clearinghouse query
Pass a pre‑employment physical and a pre‑employment drug screen; ongoing participation in random drug and alcohol testing programs
May be required to obtain pesticide/herbicide certifications or other certifications as needed

Qualifications

Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency and at least four years of full‑time experience in highway maintenance, equipment operation, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection and testing

Alternatively, a total of four years of education and/or full‑time experience, where thirty semester hours of post‑high‑school education in the relevant fields equals one year of full‑time experience

Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes eighteen months of full‑time work as a Highway Technician or Construction Technician

Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes twenty‑four months of full‑time work as a Highway Technician Associate
