This position serves as a point of contact for visitors at the Discover Denison Visitor Center. This intern will provide assistance with directions, information requests, and promote local attractions. This role will also serve as administrative support for the Marketing and Tourism Department, as well as individual travelers and groups.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Staff the Discover Denison Visitors Center, providing a welcoming and professional experience for visitorsAssist guests with directions and information on local attractions, events, dining, and activitiesAnswer phone and email inquiries related to tourism and visitor servicesFulfill Visitor Guide requests and assist with maintaining accurate printed materialsAssist with organizing and distributing visitor bags for group tours and meetingsHelp maintain an inviting, organized lobby stocked with current brochures and materialsAssist with social media content creation, including photos, videos, captions, and reelsAssist with reviewing, updating, and maintaining the Discover Denison website to ensure tourism information, event listings, business details, and visitor resources remain accurate, current, and visually engagingHelp cover events through stories or real-time content (as schedule allows)Capture and organize photos and videos for marketing and promotional useAssist with collecting upcoming events, new business spotlights, and community stories for the Discover Denison newsletterResearch tourism, hospitality, and destination marketing trendsAssist visitors with merchandise purchases, admissions, or other applicable transactions at the Discover Denison Visitor Center using established point-of-sale proceduresSupport the Discover Denison team with additional tasks as neededKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to work with the public and co-workers in a professional manner using excellent customer service and interpersonal skillsKnowledge of tourism, hospitality, marketing, or visitor experience and willingness to learn moreProficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and the ability to quickly learn other software tools as neededAbility to use strong organizational skills in order to manage multiple tasks and provide accurate, timely informationKnowledge of Denison’s attractions, events, and tourism assets and willingness to learn moreAbility to maintain detailed records and reportsAbility to communicate effectively in written and oral formatsAbility to manage interruptions while ensuring a positive visitor experienceAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other employees and the general publicAbility to use sound judgment in directing public and fulfilling customer service needs/requestsHighly skilled in customer service practices to quickly and efficiently tend to visitor’s needsAbility to maintain consistent and timely attendanceSome evenings or Saturdays may be required for events or peak visitor times- Must have High School diploma or equivalent
- Pursuing a degree in Hospitality, Tourism, Marketing, Communications, or a related field
- Poise, tact, patience and pleasant demeanor for public and interoffice contact
- Valid Driver’s License with driving record sufficient for coverage by City’s auto liability carrier

- Combination of sitting, standing, and walking
- Ability to lift and carry materials such as brochures or visitor bags (up to 50 lbs occasionally)

- Constant talking, hearing, concentrating, judgment and writing ability
- Fluctuating schedule (evenings and weekends) to accommodate events and activities at which standing and professional interaction is required
