instructor - commercial driver license (cdl) programoverview

grayson college is seeking knowledgeable and experienced adjunct instructor to support the commercial driver license (cdl) program. Adjunct faculty may be assigned to teach entry‑level driver training (eldt) theory, eldt behind‑the‑wheel (btw) range/road, including hands‑on driver training and other transportation‑related courses based on qualifications, program needs, and enrollment.

the adjunct instructor is responsible for providing high-quality instruction that promotes student success while ensuring compliance with federal motor carrier safety administration (fmcsa) regulations, texas department of transportation (txdot), texas department of licensing and regulation (tdlr) requirements, and grayson college policies. A hazardous materials (hazmat) endorsement and experience teaching hazmat‑related content are preferred.

this position reports to the director of cdl and logistics and is part-time. Teaching assignments may include daytime, evening, weekend, hybrid, or online instruction as needed.

the salary for this position is $700 per credit hour.

responsibilities
  • 75% coordinate and deliver eldt curriculum implementation, btw instruction (range and public road), scheduling, vehicle maintenance, and compliance documentation. Ensure compliance with texas department of licensing and regulation (tdlr), fmcsa, txdot and other applicable state and federal requirements. Maintain accurate student records.
  • range training: off‑road training focusing on basic vehicle control, backing skills, and vehicle inspection procedures.
  • public road training: real‑world driving scenarios, such as navigating highways, making turns, and lane changes
  • 10% works as a team member in the industrial technologies department.
  • 10% support student learning and program outcomes.
  • 5% performs other duties as assigned.

    minimum qualifications
    • valid class a commercial driver’s license (cdl) with appropriate endorsements preferred
    • must be 21 years of age or older
    • minimum two (2) years of commercial driving experience within the past ten (10) years, or meet minimum requirements for instructor licensure
    • knowledge of current modified cdl regulations and pre‑trip protocols, fmcsa eldt standards, and industry best practices
    • ability to effectively communicate, teach, coach, and evaluate students
    • clean driving record (reviewed on a case‑by‑case basis if not fully compliant)
    • ability to pass and maintain: dot physical
    • ability to pass and maintain: dot drug and alcohol screening
    • ability to pass and maintain: criminal background check (reviewed on a case‑by‑case basis; second‑chance friendly)
    • must be physically able to climb in/out of trucks, conduct inspections and safely operate cmv
    • minimum education: high school diploma or ged
    preferred qualifications
