Position: LEAD PHLEBOTOMIST

Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY: This position will be responsible to perform routine blood drawing procedures including proper collection of venous and capillary specimens, register blood screening documents, maintain flow of work orders, conduct periodic audits of blood culture techniques, coordinate phlebotomy staff, delegate work assignments and interface with nursing services to resolve patient order issues or concerns. The lead phlebotomist will assist the Lab Director and Phlebotomy Supervisor with training of new staff, assessment of phlebotomy competency, education on departmental policy, and complete problem reports for patient collections.

Additionally, the role will monitor staff training effectiveness, train new hires on patient registration, serve as the Lab liaison on selected hospital work groups, and act as specimen courier as needed.

  • Assist Lab Director and Phlebotomy Supervisor with training new staff, assessing competency, and educating on departmental policy.
  • Monitor effectiveness of staff training and train new hires on patient registration; serve as Lab liaison on selected hospital work groups.
  • Serve as specimen courier as needed.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED or higher; reading and numerical competency.
  • Training and certification from an accredited phlebotomy program required; some college coursework preferred (e.g., Medical Terminology, Microbiology, Medical Billing).
  • Minimum of two (2) years of progressive responsibility experience.
  • Certification as a Phlebotomist through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) strongly preferred; proof of high school diploma or equivalent required on hire.
  • Ability to learn applicable computer programs; knowledge and skill in obtaining laboratory specimens from all age groups.
  • Excellent verbal, listening and written communication skills.
  • Ability to perform waived and moderate complexity testing using point‑of‑care devices during code blue/trauma or as needed in other areas; demonstrate commitment to a positive team operation and work environment.
  • Ability to consistently use good judgement in directing resources to achieve goals in a timely manner with superior service excellence skills.
