Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is hiring Construction Inspectors I and II to support roadway and airfield projects across the state. Inspectors will collaborate with engineering staff, contractors, and project managers to ensure that construction methods, workmanship, and materials comply with plans, specifications, and safety standards.

• Attend pre‑construction meetings and answer contractor questions.
• Calculate payments to contractors for completed work.
• Consult with project engineers, resident project representatives, and contractor superintendents on work progress and construction issues; review equipment utilization and time/cost estimates.
• Ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports, and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
• Monitor project phasing and traffic/airport closure plans, ensuring compliance with approved safety standards; inspect barricades and, when required, shift traffic control devices.
• Observe and inspect ongoing construction work.
• Assist in engineering‑related data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and review activities for plan development by others.
• Document work progress and issue escalation throughout the project scope.
• Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
• For Construction Inspector II only: ensure adequate levels of equipment and material assignments; verify that material tests meet required standards; serve as a lead worker or project leader; coordinate labor, materials, and equipment; schedule work assignments.

• Subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, noise, and vibration.
• Medium work: lift up to 50 lb. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lb.
• Physically demanding; pre‑employment physical required.
• Must pass a drug test prior to employment; random testing is required for this safety‑impact position.

• High school graduate or equivalent in general high school studies.
• No experience required for Construction Inspector I; 1 year of experience required for Construction Inspector II.
• Experience in construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance, or process inspection; related college education or technical training may substitute for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
• Valid driver’s license (state vehicle required).

• Knowledge of construction engineering policies, procedures, and inspection methods.
• Familiarity with applicable testing methods, processes, and procedures.
• Basic mathematical skills (algebra, trigonometry, and geometry).
• Judgment and reasoning skills to define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and make decisions that support business objectives.
• Computer literacy and familiarity with relevant programs, applications, and systems.

Construction Inspector I (Grade B18): $45,521.00 – $71,055.00 per year.

Construction Inspector II (Grade B19): $48,244.00 – $76,028.00 per year.
