Department SummaryThe University of North Texas (UNT) College of Music is the largest public-university music program in the United States, and one of its most respected colleges of music. UNT offers fully accredited degrees from the bachelor to doctoral levels and is home to the world’s first jazz-studies degree program. Faculty include internationally acclaimed artists and scholars in commercial music, composition, conducting, ethnomusicology, music education, music entrepreneurship, music history, music theory, and performance.
The college presents more than 1,000 concerts and recitals annually. UNT music alumni can be found around the globe in impressive, award-winning careers across a wide range of music professions. We welcome candidates who have experience with HSI/MSIs and/or who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin and other variations), Arabic, Tagalog, Farsi, French, or/and Yoruba.
Teaching: Recruit, retain, and teach an outstanding enrollment of undergraduate and graduate jazz students. Supervise graduate-degree requirements, including graduate committees and doctoral projects/documents. The primary instructional foci of this position will include music business, jazz improvisation, and jazz musicianship. Applied instruction and other teaching assignments will align with the successful candidate’s qualifications and expertise. Other duties as assigned including, but not limited to coaching jazz, combo coaching, jazz pedagogy, literature, etc.
Service: Participate fully in academic and professional activities, including service assignments, across the campus and the profession.
Minimum QualificationsMaster’s degree in music; artist-level qualifications in saxophone, trombone, or trumpet; successful teaching experience in music business, jazz improvisation, and jazz musicianship; success in, and enthusiasm for, recruiting/retaining a robust cohort of undergraduate and graduate students.
