Minimum Hourly Salary: $17.40
Primary
Purpose:
Provides instructional support services under the teacher’s direct supervision; assists the teacher in the instruction of reading, writing and math, preparation, and management of classroom activities.
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent and ability to pass a rigorous content-oriented exam
- Associate degree or 48 semester hours of college credit
Certification
- Current Texas educational aide certificate or ability to obtain
Experience
- Some experience working with children
Special Knowledge and Skills
- Ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics
- Ability to work well with children
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in Sign Language
- Ability to exercise good judgment in handling confidential information
- Beginning Sign Language skills, minimum
- Provides direct instruction of students under direct supervision of the teacher.
- Conducts instructional exercises assigned by the teacher; works with individual students or small groups.
- Assists in classroom management.
- Conducts parent involvement activities.
- Assists teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.
- Assists with administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.
- Helps maintain a neat and orderly classroom.
- Helps with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
- Helps teachers keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
- Provides orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
- Other SHARS duties as assigned by the department.
- Provides Personal Care as identified in applicable student IEPs.
- Helps supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom. This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
- Keeps teachers informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
- Follows district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Participates in professional development, department meetings, and special events as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Tools and Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; hearing aids, assisted listening devices
Posture: Moderate standing; occasional kneeling, squatting, bending, and stooping
Motion: Repetitive hand motions; moderate walking
Lifting: Frequent light lifting, pulling, pushing, and carrying (less than 15 pounds)
Environment: Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise; may require occasional district-wide and statewide travel
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
