TITLE
Career Consultant
JOB SUMMARYProvides specialized individual and group career counseling, consulting and advising in an effort to assist students in developing the competencies necessary for competitive employment within their chosen field. This role involves informing students of their career options and opportunities by providing guidance on their academic and professional trajectories, communicating core career advancement goals, attractable employers, and relevant employment expectations. The incumbent informs students of their role selection and employment expectations, assists them in making decisions about the roles appropriate for them, and helps them articulate a career path plan that ultimately leads to a career outcome.
The professional who holds this position works within the Career Connections Center and performs career guidance activities within the Career Services clubs and programs, student development functions, and campus career resource offerings. The position also communicates with regional entities, professionals, and industry practitioners, and facilitates engagement with cross-departmental employers during work based learning and professional development initiatives. The Career Consultant is responsible for integrating academic career fundamentals in the overall student college support and is expected to help students manage meaningfully the transition from campus to the professional workforce.
The incumbent must demonstrate initiative, mentorship, and a strong sense of professional curiosity and adeptness at guiding independent learners toward working harnessing their career potential. The collaborator works remotely or in office along with peers throughout the university creates a culture that encourages workforce partners and career development with an emphasis on STEM, sustainability, entrepreneurship, real world, and expertise development.
The position is also a catalyst for fostering career readiness curriculum initiatives in collaboration with faculty and staff and specifying career outcomes and results with programs across campus. The incumbent collaborates, implements, and maintains a data-driven performance model that results in quality training outcomes, quality engagements, and high level satisfaction rates.

- Provides individualized and group career counseling and advising.
- Recommends, administers, and interprets career assessment instruments; including but not limited to: FOCUS2, MBTI, Strong Interest Inventory, card sorts, etc.
- Provides instruction sessions and career-as‑coach training for students in pre‑college development requirements, including but not limited to: digital toolbox, skill book.
- Develops and presents workshops, programming and outreach initiatives, including alumni networks and employers.
- Performs operations of Handshake, the Center’s online job/deployment search resource including approving uploaded student resumes and writing/updating articles.
- Develops and maintains applied industry knowledge and operations, with regard to programs including but not limited to:
Handshake, FOCUS2, Optimal Resume, Blackboard, Canvas, and social media (Linked In). - Attends staff meetings, trainings, and periodic off‑campus training/workshops throughout the year. Participation in external professional associations is necessary.
- Conducts academic research on trends in career development and workplace readiness, and applies knowledge of learning strategies and techniques to create appropriate, leading‑edge programs and content.
- Develops curricula for and conducts career development related workshops and class presentations.
- Promotes and implements career related programs and collect data for maintaining evidence‑based approach.
- Designs and updates career‑related handouts, tip sheets, worksheets, and presentations (in‑person and online) to facilitate students’ career education.
