Responsibilities
  • Provides quality music instruction to campers.
  • Teaches music theory as it applies to the appropriate level for playing purposes.
  • Provides appropriate lessons for instruction time.
  • Reviews assigned homework with students and re-teaches skills if necessary.
  • Be responsible for the care of instruments during class, with necessary repairs immediately reported to the Divisional Music Director.
  • Prepares students for recitals and concerts.
  • Plans, schedules, assigns, and monitors the students' work in progress and upon completion to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Recommends and develops activities that enhance students' musical abilities, motor skills, and learning skills.
  • Coordinates the program and activities within the camp's policies and operating procedures.
  • Maintains discipline and acceptable student behavior, creating an atmosphere of friendliness and security during all program periods, enabling all students to feel welcome and comfortable.
  • Participates and assists in various classes as assigned.
  • Provides constant care for campers' needs in an efficient, clean, loving, safe, secure, and healthy manner.
  • Provides opportunities for physical and mental stimulation through both inside and outside activities.
  • Participates enthusiastically as a member of the camp staff team, delivering and supervising evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
  • Sits with camper tables during meals and serves as a table monitor when needed.
  • Keeps personal living quarters neat, clean, and ready for inspection.
  • Be available to participate and assist with camp programs and activities as directed by the Camp Director.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of child and youth behavior and development.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of First Aid and C.P.R., and the ability to ensure the safety of campers and other staff.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of music education.
  • Knowledge of The Salvation Army’s mission, philosophy, culture, and protocol.
  • Ability to embrace, support, and promote The Salvation Army’s mission and ministry.
  • Ability to represent The Salvation Army in a professional manner.
  • Ability to teach classes in a group setting.
  • Ability to teach students music theory.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective mentor relationships with children and youth.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with campers and camp staff.
  • Ability to plan, develop, and implement effective childhood and youth programs and activities.
  • Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  • Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid;
    Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
Education and Experience

Six months of experience teaching music education and teaching experience, with the ability to play and teach lessons in a classroom setting involving more than one student preferred, or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Certifications
  • CPR and First Aid Certification
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to read and hear music notes.
  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.
  • Some physical requirements of the Camp Music Instructor position could be endurance, including climbing, standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Eye‑hand coordination and manual dexterity are required to manipulate music equipment and engage in activities.
  • Requires a normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs, and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
