Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer of Sound/Audio Engineering

Position Overview

The UNT College of Music invites applications for a professional‑track faculty appointment in Music Recording Engineering. This is a renewable, multi‑year appointment (3–4 years) and is not tenure‑eligible. The successful candidate will shape and lead one of the nation’s premier immersive audio training and production environments within a top‑tier comprehensive music school.

Responsibilities
  • Teach courses in recording engineering and commercial music, including sound engineering, mixing and mastering, album production, digital orchestration, and Dolby Atmos for theatrical media, with emphasis on scoring, editing, and delivery integration.
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for scheduling, maintenance, calibration, infrastructure development, equipment/software inventory, and long‑term technical planning for the Spec’s Charitable Foundation Research and Recording Lab and a newly constructed 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos mixing and mastering environment.
  • Participate fully in academic and professional activities, including service assignments, across the campus and the profession.
  • Collaborate across divisions to support interdisciplinary projects in scoring, sound design, and immersive audio.
  • Coordinate student recording projects and supervise student engineers and graduate assistants.
  • Oversee recording support for ensembles, guest artists, and faculty projects, including post‑production and archival workflows.
  • Serve as liaison for technology planning, budgeting, vendor relations, and equipment upgrades.
  • Develop industry partnerships and experiential learning opportunities.
  • Advise student capstone/practicum projects and juried portfolios.
  • Contribute to assessment, recruitment, and outreach initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Earned Master’s degree in audio engineering, music technology, recording arts, composition/media arts, or a related field; or bachelor’s degree in music or music business with significant professional recording engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in immersive (Dolby Atmos) production workflows.
  • Proficiency with DAWs and post‑production tools (Pro Tools Ultimate, Logic, Nuendo), Dolby Atmos workflows, Dante, and studio maintenance practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex technical facilities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Earned Doctorate.
  • Demonstrated record of industry engagement and/or collaborative production across genres and media formats.
  • Substantial portfolio of commercial, academic, or independent recording credits, including large ensembles.
  • Experience leading a recording facility or academic lab and supervising/mentoring staff.
  • Experience teaching immersive/interactive media audio (film, XR, game audio).
  • Professional certifications (Avid, Dante) and experience with audio infrastructure, calibration, and console/outboard maintenance.
