Department SummaryThe College of Music at the University of North Texas is seeking an Academic Advisor to join our Undergraduate Advising team. This position will play an important role in supporting and guiding first-year and transfer undergraduate students, assisting in the development of degree plans that promote timely progress toward graduation.
Position OverviewAdvises undergraduate music students, assisting them in making semester by semester plans towards the completion of their respective degrees. This position concentrates on FTIC students and first year issues. Will plan and implement programming specifically for freshman music majors. Assist with all CoM advising events including auditions, commencement, preview, etc. Assist with daily office events.
Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree and two years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, or professional academic advising.

Strong presentation skills; strong problem solving skills. Ability to learn and use a variety of simple to complex computer applications. Ability to communicate effectively with populations verbally and in writing. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to work independently.
Preferred QualificationsThe preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in music. Previous university knowledge/experience preferred.
- Maintain detailed familiarity with aspects of all music degree plans and specializations and all academic changes taking place within the university and communicating new information to students. Update and revise degree audits and inhouse forms.
- Participate in on campus training initiatives and programs for advising related topics.
- Advise all newly accepted and continuing undergraduate music students. Implement success and retention initiatives for FTIC students. Advise prospective music majors, music minors, transfer students and MUND students concerning degree requirements and alternative degree options. Advise students regarding progress toward degree and review remaining courses and requirements necessary for a timely graduation.
- Enter advising case notes in Navigate. Coordinate and maintain other academic records for undergraduate students.
- Respond to inquiries regarding admissions and transfers, and direct questions to COM admissions as appropriate. Partner effectively with campus resources to make appropriate referrals.
- Notify students of graduation procedures, assist counselors with preparation of graduation documents and the operation of graduation ceremonies as needed.
- Prepare for freshmen and transfer orientations. Advise freshman and transfer students during orientations, and give presentations to orientation groups as needed.
- Assist with planning and presentations at prospective student/parent functions such as Auditions Days, NT Preview Day, etc. Assist with planning and implementation of other Music Advising Office special events.
