Department SummaryFounded in 1977, the mission of the Intensive English Language Institute at the University
of North Texas is to provide the highest quality academic English instruction, student
services, and professional development programs for its students. The IELI provides twenty
weekly contact hours of instruction for students in up to six different levels of English
proficiency in five half-semester-long sessions per year. Students who successfully
complete IELI meet the English language requirement to matriculate into UNT degree
programs. The IELI is housed within UNT's International Affairs and works in close
cooperation with numerous administrative and academic units throughout campus
including the assessment and training of UNT International Teaching and Research
Assistants across many departments and colleges.
This position involves liaising with IELI administrators prior to each semester to determine ITA assessment and training needs. The role includes facilitating communication between departments and ITAs to schedule appointments, assessing English and presentation skills, and reporting scores and recommendations to department chairs and deans.
Additional responsibilities include setting up instructional modules for ITAs requiring further training, providing instruction, retesting ITAs at the end of the training period, and reporting findings back to IELI administration as well as UNT chairs and deans.
- MA in TESOL or very closely related field.
- Teaching at university-based intensive English program for multiple years.
- Extensive experience in assessing oral language and presentation skills of international students.
- Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends to accommodate ITA schedules.
- Ability to complete reports and communicate data to all stakeholders in a timely manner.
- Successful experience in remote teaching and assessment.
Skills and Abilities
- Proficient and working knowledge of Google Sheets, Docs, and MS Excel.
- Ability to prioritize competing needs.
- Experience with assessing and training international teaching assistants.
- Excellent rapport and cultural sensitivity in cross-cultural communication situations.
