The Department of Counseling and Higher Education promotes human development through education, research and service that advance the professions of, and scholarship in, counseling and higher education.

Position Overview

The School Counseling Field Supervisor provides mentorship, coaching, and evaluation for school counselor candidates during their practicum/internship experience. Working collaboratively with university faculty and site supervisors, the Field Supervisor conducts required observations, provides constructive feedback, and supports candidate development while ensuring compliance with Texas Education Agency (TEA), Texas Administrative Code (TAC), and university program requirements.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in School Counseling or a closely related field.
  • Valid School Counselor certification.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a certified school counselor.
  • Ability to complete required candidate observations and documentation in accordance with TEA, TAC, and university requirements.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of school counseling best practices, ethical standards, and the ASCA National Model.
  • Knowledge of TEA and Texas Administrative Code requirements related to educator preparation and school counseling practicum experiences.
  • Ability to observe, evaluate, and provide constructive, individualized feedback to counselor candidates.
  • Strong coaching, mentoring, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct pre-observation and post-observation conferences in a supportive and professional manner.
  • Strong written communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to use electronic observation and assessment systems to complete required evaluations and documentation.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple candidates and observation schedules.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with university faculty, site supervisors, and school personnel.
  • Ability to conduct in-person and virtual observations as permitted by program and TAC requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience serving as a practicum, internship, or field supervisor for counselor candidates.
  • Experience working with educator preparation programs.
  • Experience providing professional development, coaching, or mentoring to school counseling professionals.
Required License/Registration/Certifications
  • Valid Texas certification as a School Counselor.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a certified school counselor.
  • Completion of Texas Education Agency (TEA)-approved Field Supervisor Training for advanced certificate candidates, as required by the Texas Administrative Code (TAC), or the ability to complete the required training before serving as a field supervisor.
Job Duties
  • Provide Clinical Supervision and Candidate Support:
    Supervise school counselor practicum candidates by providing ongoing guidance, mentoring, and professional support throughout the clinical experience. Maintain regular communication with candidates and site supervisors to promote candidate growth and successful completion of program requirements.
