Department Summary

The Office of Disability Access (ODA) at the University of North Texas exists to prevent discrimination on the basis of disability and to help students reach a higher level of independence. It is the mission of the ODA to engage and collaborate with faculty and other campus partners to ensure students with disabilities at the University of North Texas have access to all university programs, services, and activities.

Position Overview

Access Coordinators are primarily responsible for facilitating access to the programs, services, activities, and facilities of the institution. This position will work with a caseload of students, and serve as a liaison to other on campus resources for effective and high-quality coordination of services and resources. This position collaborates with students, faculty, and staff to create an accessible campus environment, works one-on-one with students with disabilities to determine barriers to access, provides university-wide consultation, education and training on the social construction of disability and the intersections of disability with social and physical environments;

and assists with coordination of student accommodation services. It is of critical importance that this position acts as the first line of contact with students, the university community, and general public.

This specific Access Coordinator position will also serve as the Coordinator/Scheduler for Communication Access services, including American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting Services and Communication Access Real-time Translation (CART) services. This includes collaborating with contracted agencies and Staff Interpreters to schedule and coordinate services to best meet student needs and uphold our fiscal responsibility to the institution.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related field and two years of student services, student affairs, counseling, advising, or related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities

Excellent public speaking skills with experience in conducting training workshops. Ability to provide leadership and mentoring to student populations. Experience in networking across departments and programs. Ability to communicate and work with the population. Strong organizational skills and ability to simultaneously execute multiple projects. Excellent verbal and written communication, and computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling, counseling, instructional design, computer science, special education, access technology, education or a related field. Two years of experience providing services to individuals with disabilities. Knowledge of laws involving students with disabilities (ADA, 504, 508, FERPA, FHA, etc.). Experience providing assistance and training to college students, faculty, and staff. Knowledge of using various software and hardware, including assistive technology.

Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with the population. Scheduling and coordinating complex schedules with multiple stakeholders preferred. Experience with American Sign Language and serving the d/Deaf Community.

Job Duties
  • Manage caseload of students, e.g. accommodation coordination, referral to resources, advising, and course registration. Maintains thorough and accurate records relating to student documentation, service requests, and communications
  • Review student referenced disability related documentation for service eligibility. Assess the interaction of the students disability with the environment to determine reasonable accommodations. Responsive to student communications. Conduct student registration meetings to determine reasonable accommodations and need for evaluation or referrals.
  • Assist with coordination of student accommodation services.
  • Communicate effectively and diplomatically with faculty, staff, and students in addressing ODA accommodation procedures.
  • Maintain cordial relationships with faculty, staff and students on campus by being responsive to students, faculty, and staff requests and communications and working cooperatively with other student services entities.
  • Maintain working knowledge of university policies and procedures as well as federal and state disability laws.
  • Arranges sign language and oral interpreters or CART captioning for classes, labs, and events. Advises students on requesting services for ongoing courses or one-time events, emphasizing early requests for consistent coverage.
