Company Overview:

MP Materials (NYSE: MP) is rebuilding American industrial capability for a new era of autonomy, robotics, and electrification.

We are the only U.S. company with a fully integrated rare earth supply chain—from mining and refining to advanced metal and magnet manufacturing. Our products include both the critical materials used to make permanent magnets and the finished magnets themselves—enabling next‑generation technologies in robotics, automation, aerospace, transportation, defense, and energy systems. These materials are the foundation of physical AI—the convergence of computation, movement, and control.

We hire ambitious, mission‑driven people who want to tackle complex challenges and shape the future of strategic industries. Our culture is rooted in teamwork, resiliency, and integrity, with a deep commitment to operational excellence and national purpose. MP is rapidly evolving from a materials producer into a leading U.S. manufacturer—and our people are driving that transformation.

Position Overview:

MP Materials is seeking a hands‑on Controls Engineer to play a critical role in the design and development of a new greenfield facility for producing metals, alloys, and magnets. This is a rare opportunity to help shape the future of advanced manufacturing in the U.S. by building automation systems from the ground up.

The ideal candidate is an impact‑driven engineer with strong technical skills, particularly in PLC/HMI/SCADA development, and a passion for building robust, efficient, and compliant control systems. You will lead and support projects that improve site safety, operational efficiency, quality, and environmental performance through innovative automation solutions.

The facility will house a diverse range of chemical, thermal, and mechanical processes. The Controls Engineer must collaborate with cross‑functional experts, develop a solid understanding of the manufacturing processes, and support the continuous improvement of complex, networked control systems.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Lead the full control system lifecycle—from concept and design to commissioning and optimization—for assigned automation projects.
  • Develop and modify control software, including PLC logic, operator interface graphics, alarm management, and data collection tools.
  • Design, program, and troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA systems, with an emphasis on:
Rockwell Automation (Studio 5000 / RSLogix 5000, Factory Talk View) and/or Siemens (TIA Portal, Step 7, WinCC).
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory standards (OSHA, NEC, NFPA 70E, UL), and drive adherence to EHS best practices.
  • Execute and lead small‑to‑medium‑scale controls projects, ensuring alignment with schedule, budget, and performance targets.
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and process engineers to design and integrate automation solutions within new and existing production systems.
    • Partner with IT and operations teams to commission, test, and validate control systems, ensuring seamless integration and reliable performance.
  • Coordinate with remote teams and external vendors for the delivery and integration of skid mounted systems and specialized automation equipment.
  • Continuously improve control system capabilities by integrating feedback from operations and engineering teams.
  • Perform technical troubleshooting and support on control systems to maintain uptime and resolve system issues.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Computer Science, Mechatronics, or a related field—or equivalent industry experience.
  • 3+ years of hands‑on experience designing, programming, and implementing industrial automation and control systems.
  • Proficiency in Rockwell and Siemens automation platforms (Studio 5000 / Factory Talk View / TIA Portal / WinCC / Step
    7)
  • Experience with industrial communication protocols: OPC, Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus TCP.
  • Solid understanding of control system design, including panel layout, electrical protection, wiring practices, and instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with safety systems, motion control, VFDs, and I/O architecture.
  • Experience in working in diverse,…
