The Final Hand - Crew and Cast Call Lead, Supporting, Background

An afrosurreal psychological drama inspired by the folklore of High John the Conqueror and  'er Rabbit. If you're drawn to films like Sinners, The Lighthouse, The Card Counter, or stories rooted in folklore, tension, strategy, and myth...this world is for you.

The Conqueror. High John is calm, observant, and deeply self-assured — the kind of man who carries quiet authority without ever demanding it. He is the dealer, but more than that: he is the House. He speaks little, but every gesture holds intention. His movements feel ritualistic rather than performative, suggesting a connection to something far older than the room itself.

His power is almost entirely non-verbal — the performance lives in the hands, the stillness, the weight of a look.

Character Descriptions
  • The Player Male 25-40 y.o. White / Caucasian

The Challenger. A confident, intelligent man who believes power can be decoded through observation — and spends the film learning he was wrong. The Player carries the arc of the film — from casual confidence to quiet devastation. He studies High John closely, convinced whatever advantage the dealer holds can be replicated. His downfall is not ignorance. It is a subtle arrogance: the belief that mastery can be earned simply by watching long enough.

  • The Stranger Male 18-70 y.o. All ethnicities

The Messenger. Appears briefly at the start of the film — a quiet gatekeeper who sets everything in motion with a single gesture. The Stranger slides a chip across the table after the Player loses a hand. He understands the nature of the game but offers no explanation. His gesture is not generosity — it is an invitation. The test begins the moment the chip is accepted.

He sets things in motion and steps back.

  • Waitress/Bartender Female 23-45 y.o. All ethnicities

Background role set within a period backroom gambling parlor. She moves through the room with quiet authority — carrying drinks, reading the table. She has seen everything and reveals nothing. No dialogue required.

  • Table Patrons Both genders 23-45 y.o. All ethnicities

3–5 seated background players for the gambling parlor environment.

  • The Couple Both genders 21-70 y.o. African-American

One couple in the background of the gambling parlor — two roles.
