Child Support Officers (CSOs) conduct detailed investigations to locate absent parents, assist in establishing paternity, obtain court orders for financial support and health care coverage, enforce child support orders, respond to customer inquiries, and promote the involvement of both parents. They collaborate with state agencies and community organizations to serve Texas families while enjoying a healthy work‑life balance and engaging camaraderie with colleagues across the state.
Responsibilities- Conduct detailed investigations to locate absent parents, verify employment, and determine assets.
- Assist in establishing paternity and obtaining court orders for financial support and health care coverage for children.
- Prepare documents related to legal and administrative actions to establish or enforce child support orders.
- Negotiate lump‑sum payments and out‑of‑court settlements with non‑custodial parents.
- Monitor child support cases, refer delinquent cases for enforcement action, and attend court as needed.
- Document all case actions using agency tools such as Children Are My Priority (ChAMP) and the Enterprise Content Management (ECM) repository.
- Review cases for eligibility of closure.
- Research case information on the computer, including the ChAMP system.
- Maintain current knowledge of child‑support policies, Texas Family Law, federal regulations, and other states’ IV‑D regulations.
- Explain Child Support Program policies, procedures, and regulations to customers.
- Respond to customer inquiries and resolve complaints concerning case status.
- Assess validity of complaints against the IV‑D program impartially.
- Serve as Notary Public and perform related work as assigned.
- Attend work regularly in compliance with the agreed‑upon schedule, ensuring security and confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Comply with all agency policies and procedures, including ethics and integrity policies.

Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Experience in full‑time Child Support Program, credit collections, investigations, legal assistant, legal secretary, customer service, or IV‑A eligibility specialist may substitute for the required degree on a year‑for‑year basis. - Experience: One (1) year of full‑time experience in one of the listed fields.
- Knowledge: Investigative practices and techniques;
Texas Family Law; federal regulations; other states’ IV‑D regulations. - Skills: Interviewing and negotiating; effective oral and written communication; use of personal computer for word‑processing and data entry/retrieval; basic mathematical computations; prioritizing and meeting deadlines.
- Abilities: Work cooperatively in a professional office environment; provide excellent customer service; work in person at the assigned OAG location and collaborate with coworkers daily; arrange personal transportation for business travel; work more than 40 hours as needed; lift and relocate 30 lbs.; travel up to 15% (including overnight); type 35 words per minute (typing test required).
- Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four‑year college or university; investigative practices and techniques; ability to read, write, and speak Spanish.
