Overview

Join the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) as a Security Officer II in Denton, TX. Your work will ensure the safety and security of residents, employees, and visitors at state-supported living centers serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain a secure environment at the facility by observing, taking action, and reporting incidents or security violations involving residents.
  • Monitor alarms and surveillance cameras, patrol buildings and grounds, check badges or identification at facility gate/entrance, and handle after-hours emergency calls.
  • Initiate emergency response as appropriate and disseminate information, notifying facility management and law enforcement when necessary.
  • Perform monthly fire extinguisher inspections in all buildings and assist with fire drills and life safety checks.
  • Identify unfamiliar persons on campus and ensure appropriate lighting for safety.
  • May train and mentor other security officers.
  • Work under general supervision with moderate latitude for initiative.
  • Attend mandatory training to meet requirements and develop professionally.
  • Participate in disaster response or continuity of operations activation as required.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs)
  • Attend work on a regular basis, following a specific shift schedule or rotating schedule, extended shift, and/or overtime as required.
  • Monitor surveillance cameras for unauthorized persons, fires, and unusual occurrences; report emergencies immediately.
  • Conduct routine patrols, taking appropriate action for unauthorized persons or activities.
  • Respond to fire alarms, investigate causes, and take emergency action if necessary.
  • Assist in apprehending suspects where reasonably possible.
  • Prepare timely and accurate documentation of emergencies and/or security violations.
  • Evaluate and recommend changes to security regulations.
  • Train, coach, and mentor new security officers.
  • Active participation in disaster response and/or recovery or COOP activation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Knowledge of building security, surveillance equipment, and rules for building admissions and exits.
  • Skill in oral and written communication, including writing incident reports.
  • Ability to communicate with potentially aggressive residents, visitors, and employees.
  • Ability to patrol grounds, detect danger, and take appropriate action.
  • Physical ability to walk extensively, run occasionally, and assist in restraining during an emergency.
  • Ability to drive a state-vehicle.
  • Ability to prepare concise reports.
  • Ability to train others.
  • Ability to remain calm, reasonable, and react quickly in emergencies.
  • Skill in defusing potentially difficult situations.
  • Skill in monitoring and assessing situations and determining appropriate response.
  • Knowledge of basic traffic and parking regulations.
Initial Screening Criteria
  • High School diploma, GED, or 12 months of work experience.
  • Work experience in security, law enforcement, or military preferred.
  • Experience with people with intellectual or developmental disabilities or mental health issues preferred.
Registrations, Licensure Requirements, and Certifications
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license or obtain it within 90 days after hire date.
  • Applicants with an out-of-state license must provide an original certified driving record.
Additional Information
  • Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks.
  • Males aged 18–25 must register with Selective Service.
  • All State Supported Living Center employees are subject to random drug testing.
  • Flexibility in work hours may be required; the position may require overtime, weekends, and holidays.
  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
