Detention Officer - PART TIME County Jail - Sheriff

Overview

The Detention Officer I performs specialized law enforcement work in the care and security of inmates in the County Jail. Duties include admitting and booking inmates, supervising trustees, ensuring jail security, managing commissary duties, inventory control, inmate classification, and escorting inmates.

• Admits prisoners to the County Jail; ensures proper booking, searches, and inmate communication rights.
• Reviews logs and reports from the previous shift; maintains knowledge of inmate population and cell assignments; completes activity logs and reports.
• Patrols the entire jail area to prevent escapes and maintain order; monitors cameras and emergency systems.
• Supervises inmate trustees performing duties such as meal service, material handling, cell cleaning, laundry, and kitchen work.
• Issues linens, clothing, toilet supplies, supervises shower and inventory, and oversees cafeteria area.
• Distributes and collects mail; inspects items brought to jail for inmates.
• Inspects janitorial work to meet state and local standards.
• Prepares and transports inmates to and from court, visitations, medical appointments, and work release; secures release procedures.
• Performs life‑safety functions requiring CPR and fire‑safety training.
• Answers telephone calls and assists the public with inmate status inquiries.
• Logs, secures, and accounts for inmate property; returns items upon release.
• Monitors housing assignments using Texas Criminal Justice Standards and custody assessment systems; updates custody status as required.
• Sorts and searches incoming mail for contraband; logs and records money and property.
• Ensures regular and punctual attendance.

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• High School diploma or GED required.
• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Must attain certification by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement as a Jailer within one (1) year of employment.
• Possess a valid Driver's License; must be able to obtain a Texas driver's license within 90 days.
• Willingness to work a minimum of 24 hours per week (part‑time).
• All required training will take place between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
• Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays under potentially hazardous conditions.
• Acceptance of a 12‑month probationary period if hired as a new employee.
