The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or have behavioral problems. The centers provide campus‑based direct services and supports at 13 centers located throughout the state.
Responsibilities- Perform routine, journey‑level work under the guidance of experienced Maintenance Specialists in building maintenance and construction trades such as carpentry, masonry, painting, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, welding and refrigeration.
- Conduct inspections, adjustments, installations of adaptive equipment, wheelchair ramps, safety equipment, doors, windows and related items.
- Maintain and repair buildings, utility systems, and stationary equipment, operating motorized equipment as needed.
- Complete paperwork and maintain work order records accurately.
- Communicate verbally and in writing, possibly using electronic equipment.
- Act as a team member with other shops and employees, and perform ancillary tasks such as operating a motor vehicle, making deliveries and picking up supplies.
- Work under moderate supervision with limited latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
- May serve in on‑call status on a rotating schedule to meet operational needs of the facility.
- May attend disaster response and/or recovery activities or COOP activation, requiring alternate shift or location assignments.
- Attend work consistently and work a specific shift schedule, with potential overtime or extended shifts as per agency leave policy.
- Inspect, adjust, maintain and repair building systems, following recognized codes and standards for plumbing, HVAC, welding, carpentry, painting and electrical.
- Use hand tools, power tools, test and safety equipment to perform necessary repairs/renovations/installations.
- Process and maintain records on work orders, projects and material requisitions accurately.
- Operate heavy machinery such as backhoes, forklifts, etc., as necessary.
- Train others on proper procedures and methods for repairs or inspections.
- Building maintenance, plumbing, HVAC, sanitation, refrigeration and/or electrical systems.
- Industrial safety, fire and safety regulations.
- Preventive maintenance and inspection of buildings and building systems.
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools and equipment.
- Ability to follow instructions and interpret drawings, schematics or sketches.
- Effective oral and written communication with the maintenance/facility team.
- High school graduate, GED or relevant work experience (masonry, carpentry, painting, repairs, renovations, routine preventive maintenance).
- Valid Texas driver’s license (or obtain within 90 days of hire). Out‑of‑state license holders must provide an original certified driving record.
- Pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities).
- All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
Applicants may be required to pass additional background and due diligence checks. This position is not eligible for telework. Flexibility in work hours may be required, including weekends and holidays. Males aged 18–25 must register with Selective Service. All employees are subject to random drug testing.
