Accounting Manager, Financial Analyst
The Corporate Accountant supports the Controller and CFO in maintaining accurate financial records, strong internal controls, and timely regulatory compliance. This role has primary responsibility for payroll accounting and compliance, cash and bank reconciliations, fixed assets, benefit and payroll account tie-outs, and annual audits (including workers’ compensation, general liability, and WSI). The position requires strong attention to detail, ownership mentality, and the ability to operate independently in a deadline-driven environment.
This position supports a payroll-heavy, multi-state environment and may include prevailing wage/certified payroll requirements.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Remit weekly payroll taxes (federal, state, and local) accurately and on time.
- Remit weekly payroll garnishments and maintain compliance with court and agency requirements.
- Prepare and file monthly and quarterly payroll tax reports (941s, state equivalents, etc.).
- Prepare and distribute annual W-2s and related year-end payroll filings.
- Update and maintain payroll tax rates (FICA, FUTA, SUTA, state and local rates, etc.).
- Tie out payroll general ledger accounts each pay period and month-end.
- Reconcile payroll registers to GL and resolve discrepancies timely.
- Serve as point of contact for payroll tax agencies and respond to notices or inquiries.
- Perform monthly bank statement reconciliations for all operating, payroll, and related accounts.
- Investigate and resolve reconciling items promptly.
- Assist in cash management reporting and controls.
- Tie out benefit deductions and employer contributions to invoices and carrier statements.
- Reconcile benefit payable and expense accounts monthly.
- Support open enrollment, plan changes, and annual renewals from an accounting and compliance perspective.
- Assist in maintaining the fixed asset subledger, including additions, disposals, and transfers.
- Calculate and record depreciation in accordance with company policy.
- Reconcile fixed assets to the general ledger.
- Support capital expenditure tracking and reporting.
- Coordinate and support annual workers’ compensation and general liability audits.
- Prepare schedules and documentation for Annual Audits (workers’ comp, general liability, WSI).
- Assist with internal and external financial audits, including preparation of audit support schedules.
- Assist with month-end and year-end close activities as assigned.
- Prepare journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Identify process improvements and recommend efficiencies within accounting workflows.
- Provide backup support for Controller functions as needed.
Related responsibilities:
- Maintain accurate accounting records, supporting schedules, and documentation.
- Support prevailing wage/certified payroll requirements as needed.
- Coordinate effectively across departments (HR, Payroll, Operations) to ensure accurate processing and compliance.
- Reconcile vendor, benefit, and payroll-related discrepancies and follow through to resolution.
- Ensure the accuracy and detail of all data entered into Company systems, and updates regularly as needed.
- Maintain positive relationships with employees, vendors, agencies and co-workers.
- Display excellent multitasking skills while managing recurring deadlines and multiple priorities.
- Timely completion of all job-related paperwork and audit deliverables.
Job Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
- 3–7 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in construction, manufacturing, or payroll-heavy environments.
- Strong knowledge of payroll accounting, payroll tax compliance, and reconciliations.
- Experience with general ledger systems and payroll platforms.
- Advanced Excel skills (reconciliations, tie-outs, analysis).
- High attention to detail and ability to meet recurring deadlines without supervision.
Preferred:
- Experience with multi-state payroll and complex payroll tax jurisdictions.
- Experience supporting insurance audits (workers’ comp, general liability).
- Experience with fixed asset accounting in a capital-intensive environment.
- CPA or CPA-eligible a plus.
- Experience supporting prevailing wage/certified payroll processes.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Typical office environment.
- Sitting long periods at a desk using a computer.
- At times may be on the phone for periods of time.
- Some light travel may be required.
