Overview of Position:Under close supervision, the Accountant I performs core accounting functions in support of the Company's financial operations, including general ledger maintenance, account reconciliations, and assistance with month-end close. This is an entry‑level position intended for a detail‑oriented, motivated professional early in their accounting career. Prior experience in the oil & gas industry is not required; the company will provide industry‑specific training in accounting concepts unique to the exploration and production (E&P) sector.
Candidates with a solid foundation in general accounting principles and a willingness to learn are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Prepare and post journal entries to the general ledger in accordance with GAAP and company policy.
- Perform monthly balance sheet and bank account reconciliations, researching and resolving discrepancies.
- Assist with month-end and year-end close processes, including accruals, prepaids, and account roll‑forwards.
- Maintain accurate and organized accounting records and supporting documentation to satisfy internal controls and audit requirements.
- Assist with the preparation of schedules and work papers for internal, external, and regulatory audits.
- Learn and apply oil & gas‑specific accounting processes over time, including joint interest billing (JIB), authorization for expenditure (AFE) tracking, and division order/revenue distribution basics, with training and mentorship provided.
- Assist in the preparation of routine financial reports and variance analyses for management review.
- Support compliance with applicable regulatory reporting requirements, including those specific to California E&P operations.
- Collaborate with other departments to gather and verify accounting data.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and controls; elevate issues appropriately.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive financial information.
- Perform all other job‑related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field (recent graduates welcome to apply).
- 0-2 years of professional accounting experience; internships and academic coursework will be considered.
- No oil & gas industry experience is required; the company will provide on-the-job training in industry‑specific accounting practices.
- Coursework or exposure to cost accounting, energy accounting, or extractive industries accounting (helpful, not required).
- Experience with an ERP or accounting system.
- Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Excel (e.g., formulas, pivot tables, lookups) and general comfort with accounting or ERP software.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in a deadline‑driven environment.
- Sound analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize workload, and meet recurring monthly deadlines.
- High degree of integrity when handling confidential financial data.
- Valid driver's license with a driving record deemed acceptable by the company's auto insurance carrier may be required if traveling to field and operational sites.
