Construction Surveyor

Job Description

The Construction Surveyor will support a self-perform concrete construction group by providing precise construction staking, setting control points, and performing takeoff calculations for building projects. This role focuses primarily on field-based work while also offering the opportunity to grow into preconstruction, constructability reviews, and broader responsibilities within the business. The position is ideal for an experienced construction surveyor who wants to advance quickly, contribute to complex building projects, and potentially develop into a project management or other leadership role.

Responsibilities

* Perform construction staking for concrete and building projects with a high level of accuracy.

* Set and verify control points on active construction sites to support layout and construction activities.

* Complete takeoff calculations to support estimating, planning, and construction operations.

* Work in the field on a daily basis, traveling to various project sites as required.

* Collaborate closely with the self-perform concrete construction team to ensure layout aligns with plans and specifications.

* Use surveying instruments and field-centric technology to collect, verify, and document survey data.

* Assist with preconstruction takeoff and constructability reviews as needed, supporting the broader project team.

* Leverage land surveying experience to transition effectively into building construction applications, if applicable.

* Maintain clear and accurate records of survey work, control points, and staking activities.

* Support the adoption and use of technologies such as ground penetrating radar (GPR) and 3D scanning as these capabilities expand.

* Follow site safety procedures and best practices while working on active construction sites.

* Communicate effectively with project teams, superintendents, and field personnel to clarify layout requirements and resolve discrepancies.

Essential Skills

* At least 3 years of experience in surveying, specifically focused on construction staking.

* Strong knowledge of construction staking methods and best practices.

* Proven ability to set and verify control points accurately on construction sites.

* Hands-on experience working on building construction projects, particularly in a concrete or structural environment.

* Proficiency with surveying practices in a construction setting, including field-centric tools and workflows.

* Experience with land surveying and construction stakeout, with the ability to adapt to building construction if coming from heavy highway or similar backgrounds.

* Familiarity with AutoCAD and Civil 3D for reviewing and working with construction drawings and survey data.

* Ability to perform takeoff calculations to support construction planning and execution.

* Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in all survey-related tasks.

* Ability to work independently in the field and manage daily responsibilities across multiple project locations.

Additional

Skills & Qualifications

* Experience with ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a strong plus and considered a nice-to-have qualification.

* Interest in learning and working with 3D scanning technologies as they are implemented in future projects.

* Ability and willingness to assist with preconstruction takeoff and constructability reviews.

* Background in heavy highway or land surveying with sufficient experience to transition into building construction.

* Willingness to be trained on new technologies and methods, including GPR and 3D scanning.

* Professional licensure as a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) is not required but may be beneficial in the future.

* Desire to grow into project management or other advanced roles within the business.

* Strong communication and collaboration skills for working with field and office teams.

Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based, with regular travel to active construction sites across a broad geographic area, including locations from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs and Vail. The Construction Surveyor works outdoors on concrete and building construction projects, often in varying weather and site conditions. The position involves daily use of surveying instruments, field-centric technologies, and construction documentation.
