Estimator, Quantity Surveyor, Civil Engineering
The Position:
We are looking for an Estimator who is early in their career and ready to develop fast. You do not need an extensive track record — you need the right foundation, the right aptitude, and the drive to become proficient in one of the more technical estimating disciplines in commercial construction.
This role supports the full estimating lifecycle: processing bid invitations, performing quantity takeoffs, building cost estimates, coordinating vendor and subcontractor pricing, and assembling complete bid packages. You will work directly with our Preconstruction Manager, who will provide direction and mentorship as you grow into the role.
What we are looking for is someone who is organized, detail‑oriented, fast‑moving, and genuinely interested in learning how retaining walls are designed, specified, and built.
Responsibilities:Bid Evaluation & Pursuit Strategy
- Process invitations to bid, RFQs, and estimate inquiries in a timely and organized manner.
- Support bid/no‑bid evaluation by reviewing project scope, schedule, and fit with MWC's capabilities.
- Maintain accurate bid logs and deadline tracking to ensure no opportunities are missed.
- Read and interpret bid packages including drawings, specifications, and scope of work documents.
- Identify and flag inclusions, exclusions, and items requiring clarification before bid submission.
- Develop familiarity with geotechnical reports and learn to identify cost‑relevant subsurface conditions.
- Perform quantity takeoffs for retaining wall system components: block, geogrid, drainage aggregate, drainage pipe, corefill, leveling pads, caps, and associated earthwork.
- Build cost estimates incorporating materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractor pricing under the direction of the Preconstruction Manager.
- Verify takeoff quantities and estimate line items for accuracy prior to submission.
- Assist in drafting scope narratives that define what MWC includes, excludes, and assumes in each bid.
- Assemble complete bid packages including required forms, prequalification documents, and supporting materials.
- Manage submission deadlines with consistency and precision.
- Solicit material and subcontractor pricing from vendors, suppliers, and specialty subs.
- Level and compare vendor quotes to identify the most competitive and complete pricing.
- Coordinate project details with vendors and engineers as needed to support accurate estimate development.
- Learn to identify prevailing wage and Davis‑Bacon applicability on public sector bids.
- Apply correct wage classifications in estimates under the guidance of the Preconstruction Manager.
- Develop working knowledge of bonding and insurance cost considerations in bid development.
- Maintain accurate and current data in the company CRM: bid status, follow‑up dates, and award outcomes.
- Manage prequalification submittals and related documentation.
- Support the Preconstruction Manager with administrative tasks, file organization, and correspondence as needed.
Required
- 2+ years of experience in construction estimating, project coordination, or a closely related role.
- Demonstrated ability to perform quantity takeoffs and organize estimate data accurately.
- Strong attention to detail — errors in takeoff and pricing have direct cost consequences.
- Ability to read construction drawings and specifications.
- Proficiency with digital takeoff tools (Bluebeam Revu, On‑Screen Takeoff, or similar) or demonstrated ability to learn them quickly.
- Organized and deadline‑driven. You manage your own workload without needing to be reminded.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- Exposure to retaining wall, civil, geotechnical, or specialty structure work in any capacity.
- Familiarity with CRM platforms for pipeline and bid management.
- Experience supporting public bid submissions or prevailing wage projects.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- Competitive, commensurate with experience. $65k-$75k base salary.
- 401(k) with company match
- Health, dental, and vision
- Paid time off and holidays
- Direct mentorship from experienced Preconstruction leadership
- Exposure to complex specialty construction work
