Project Superintendent - Asphalt Paving (Req #: 372)

Position Description

Division: Brannan Sand + Gravel

Reports To: Area Manager

FLSA Status: Full Time / Exempt

Salary Range: $80,000.00 - $ DOE

Position Summary:

As Project Superintendent, you are proactive and results-oriented, ensuring high-quality work on assigned heavy civil projects (CDOT, FAA, Municipal, Mainline Paving). This role requires strong leadership to guide paving superintendents and crews, clear communication with internal and external stakeholders (subcontractors, inspectors, owners/GCs), and a comprehensive understanding of project financials (budgets, change orders, cost codes, purchase orders, contracts) and design.

Functional Responsibilities:

  • Lead and Empower Field Teams:
    Provide clear direction, resources (tools, materials, equipment), and support to paving superintendents and crews, ensuring a shared understanding of duties and responsibilities.
  • Champion Safety and Compliance:
    Cultivate a robust safety culture by actively enforcing best practices, ensuring compliance with site‑specific safety manuals and OSHA regulations, maintaining a clean and safe job site, providing necessary safety equipment, and taking corrective action on violations. Coordinate safety training and program administration.
  • Drive Quality and Profitable Execution:
    Understand project scope, budget, and expectations thoroughly to consistently deliver high‑quality work and execute projects profitably. Proactively address potential issues to mitigate risks.
  • Manage Project Documentation and Reporting:
    Maintain accurate and accessible project records, including daily reports, field/inspection reports, purchase orders, contracts, billing reports, receipts, delivery tickets, and correspondence. Monitor subcontractor performance against project documents and manage quality control cost reports, change orders, monthly billing input, punch lists, and other required reports. Track project progress, including labor and material costs.
  • Cultivate Stakeholder Relationships:
    Build and maintain strong working relationships with owners, their representatives, architects, engineers, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Proactive Planning and Coordination:
    Lead or actively participate in pre‑planning meetings with subcontractors to ensure understanding of schedules, methods, company procedures, and quality standards. Develop and maintain a three‑week look‑ahead schedule, pre‑plan schedule activities, manpower, and material needs, and communicate regularly with the project team. Review, expedite, and monitor material deliveries, assessing design revisions for cost and schedule impacts.
  • Ensure Quality and Address Issues:
    Provide quality control and assurance for all work. Proactively communicate with subcontractors to address issues, resolve problems and disputes promptly, and ensure punch lists are completed according to exit strategies. Participate in project reviews, reporting any issues or delays immediately.
  • Support Project Close‑Out:
    Ensure the timely completion of the punch list and report final project numbers.

Position Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Successfully supervised, directed, and mentored multiple construction crews with 2+ years of heavy civil experience (CDOT, FAA, Municipal, Mainline Paving).
  • Ensured project safety through proactive implementation of safety requirements.
  • Managed budgets, change orders, cost codes, and purchase orders for projects up to $5M.
  • Proactively identified and resolved issues, anticipating potential challenges.
  • Effectively managed time, prioritized tasks, and met deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated adaptability and sound decision‑making in dynamic environments.
