Job Title:
Construction Surveyor
Job Description
This role offers an experienced construction surveyor the opportunity to join a self-perform concrete construction group and play a key part in layout, control, and preconstruction planning. You will perform construction staking, establish and maintain control points, and complete takeoff calculations to support complex building projects. The position combines hands‑on field work with growing opportunities to contribute to preconstruction takeoffs, constructability reviews, and emerging technologies such as ground penetrating radar and 3D scanning.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to grow quickly within a small, highly collaborative survey team.
- Perform precise construction staking for self-perform concrete construction projects, ensuring accurate layout of structures and site features.
- Establish, set, and maintain control points on active construction sites to support ongoing layout and verification activities.
- Complete detailed takeoff calculations to support quantity estimates, layout planning, and preconstruction efforts.
- Use field-centric survey equipment and tools to collect, verify, and document site data in support of construction operations.
- Support preconstruction activities by assisting with takeoffs and constructability reviews using relevant computer programs.
- Collaborate closely with project teams, including field supervisors and project leadership, to ensure survey work aligns with construction plans and schedules.
- Adapt land surveying experience, where applicable, to building construction needs, learning new methods and standards as required.
- Assist with the use of ground penetrating radar (GPR) equipment as needed, supporting subsurface investigations and layout verification.
- Participate in the early stages of 3D scanning implementation as the team develops future capabilities in this area.
- Maintain accurate survey records, notes, and digital files to support project documentation and quality control.
- Follow site safety procedures and best practices while working on active construction sites in various locations.
- At least 3 years of experience in surveying, with a strong focus on construction staking.
- Demonstrated expertise in construction staking for building projects, including layout for self-perform concrete work.
- Proven ability to set, verify, and maintain survey control points on construction sites.
- Strong knowledge of construction staking methods and best practices, particularly for building construction.
- Building construction experience, with the ability to apply survey skills to vertical and structural work rather than only heavy highway or land-only projects.
- Proficiency with field-centric survey tools and workflows used for construction layout and data collection.
- Experience performing takeoff calculations to support construction planning and layout.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD and Civil 3D for working with construction drawings and survey data.
- Ability to travel regularly to multiple job sites across a wide geographic area.
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and quality in all survey tasks.
- Effective communication skills to coordinate with field teams and project stakeholders.
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a strong plus.
- Interest in and willingness to learn GPR operations using in-house equipment.
- Interest in 3D scanning technologies and openness to developing skills in this area as future needs arise.
- Experience in land surveying or heavy highway work, with the ability and desire to transition into building construction surveying.
- Ability to use computer programs for preplanning, preconstruction takeoffs, and constructability reviews.
- Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) credential is not required but would be a nice-to-have for future needs.
- Motivation to grow into roles such as project management or other areas of the business.
Work Environment
This role is primarily field-based and requires regular travel to active construction sites across a broad region, including areas such as Fort Collins, Colorado Springs, and Vail. You will work…
