Data Enterprise Reporter
TEGNA Inc. helps people thrive in their local communities by providing the trusted local news and services that matter most. With 64 television stations in 51 U.S. markets, TEGNA reaches more than 100 million people monthly across the web, mobile apps, streaming, and linear television. Together, we are building a sustainable future for local news.
TEGNA, the parent company of 64 television stations in 51 U.S. markets, is hiring a Data Enterprise Reporter who uses data to find, report, and tell stories that hold institutions accountable and help audiences understand the forces shaping their lives. The ideal candidate knows that data is just the start of the story.
This person has experience finding the story in raw data and then succinctly explaining findings to other reporters, news leaders, producers and the audience. You know how to find the heart and impact of a story within the data that will connect with the audience.
In this role, you will create visualizations and dashboards that bring context and understanding to your data-driven-reporting. You will write articles, conduct interviews, produce short explainers and vertical videos, and appear on camera to discuss your reporting.
This is a highly collaborative position working with national content, product, and growth teams, as well as local reporters and producers. One day you may be leading a national data-driven story and the next you may be working with a local investigative reporter on breaking news.
The preferred work location is Denver, but candidates in any TEGNA market will be considered. This is a hybrid role.
Key Responsibilities
- Report and write stories independently and in collaboration with other reporters.
- Collect, clean, analyze, and visualize datasets to surface meaningful trends and insights, with a focus on consumer, health, legal, and government arenas.
- Publish a mix of quick-turn explainers and enterprise or investigative reporting.
- Join anchors for conversational, on-camera segments talking about your reporting.
- Pitch data-driven stories that are compelling, relevant, and accountability-focused.
- Identify and pursue stories with the potential for real-world impact.
- Add context, scale, and verification to breaking news coverage.
- Translate complex data findings into clear, accessible journalism.
- Use AI-assisted tools to support data reporting.
- Work with Special Projects Producers to validate findings and ensure accuracy.
- Partner with local newsrooms to localize enterprise data stories.
- Work with the Product team to support data-driven storytelling and tools.
- Use audience analytics to understand audience needs.
Salary range: $90,000 - $100,000
Qualifications
- 3 – 5 years experience as a news reporter, preferably with data-driven or investigative work.
- Strong writing and reporting skills across platforms.
- Experience working with data using spreadsheets and/or basic SQL, Python, or R.
- Solid statistical literacy and ability to explain findings clearly.
- Familiarity with public records and FOIA.
- Collaborative mindset and comfort working across teams.
