Consumer And Money Reporter
TEGNA Inc. helps people thrive in their local communities by providing the trusted local news and services that matter most. With 64 television stations in 51 U.S. markets, TEGNA reaches more than 100 million people monthly across the web, mobile apps, streaming, and linear television. Together, we are building a sustainable future for local news.
TEGNA, the parent company of 64 television stations in 51 U.S. markets, is hiring a veteran, well-sourced Consumer & Money Reporter who can break news, help people save money, and keep people safe. This reporter should be equally comfortable writing fast, accurate online articles, creating compelling vertical videos, using their phone as their main camera, video editing, and talking conversationally about their reporting during live hits with an anchor.
The ideal candidate is data-driven and passionate about providing practical solutions for everyday Americans navigating the rising cost of living.
This reporter helps audiences protect their wallets, understand the forces driving daily costs, and navigate a confusing consumer landscape. You'll become a trusted voice who can break news, simplify complicated issues, and show people what's changing—and what they can do about it.
This is a highly collaborative position working with national content, product, and growth teams, as well as local reporters and producers. One day you may be leading a national consumer story and the next you may be working with local reporters and producers on consumer breaking news.
The preferred work location is Denver, but candidates in any TEGNA market will be considered. This is a hybrid role.

- Report on scams, consumer risks, price trends, and shifts affecting Americans' everyday finances.

- Write fast, accurate digital articles with sharp takeaways and actionable context.
- Create and publish engaging vertical videos that bring your stories to life on social and mobile platforms.
- Join anchors for conversational, on-camera segments explaining what your reporting means for consumers.
- Monitor data, documents, complaints, and national consumer trends to spot patterns early.
- Collaborate with editors, video producers, and national teams to deliver stories across platforms.
- Monitor performance data across markets to identify which consumer stories resonate and why.
- Partner with local markets to amplify consumer stories, share sourcing and expertise.
- 1 - 2 years covering consumer, business, finance, or economy stories at a high level.
- 5+ years print or television news reporting experience.
- Strong, active sourcing across consumer industries, regulators, watchdogs, and experts.
- Proven ability to break news and produce exclusive, high-impact stories.
- Excellent writing skills with a knack for clarity and service journalism.
- Experience creating short-form vertical video (Tik Tok, Reels, Shorts) with on-camera presence.
- Comfortable explaining complex topics in an accessible, conversational way—live and unscripted.
- Strong understanding of cost-of-living issues, price dynamics, scams, consumer protections, and personal finance trends.
- Ability to work quickly under deadline while maintaining accuracy and context.
- A collaborative mindset and willingness to experiment with formats and storytelling styles.
