This position provides routine and emergency medical care, on‑call assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of inmates in one or more prison clinical settings. Physicians are responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
- Conducting medical/physical examinations;
- Ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic tests and diagnosing medical conditions;
- Prescribing medications and treatment;
- Educating patients about preventive health care;
- Ensuring minor medical procedures are performed on‑site;
- Accountable for the work product of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants, providing clinical supervision, consultation, education, and professional development;
- Providing medical services to a daily patient caseload including chronic care, sick call, emergencies and routine physicals;
- Participating in the monthly on‑call schedule and providing on‑site assistance as needed;
- Providing instruction, demonstration and training to other health care professionals;
- Providing medical advice for other units or specialties through consultation regarding patients or protocols;
- Advising management on the development of medical programs, treatment standards and clinical pathways;
- Ensuring compliance with DOC administrative regulations, policies, procedures, clinical standards, state statute and medical directives;
- Maintaining problem lists and M‑Code ratings, applying and updating housing and work restrictions, and obtaining authorization for consultations, diagnostic procedures and surgeries;
- Participating in restrained inmate cases for medical reasons;
- Attending quarterly medical review board meetings, monthly physician roundtable meetings and other division meetings.
- Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Colorado as a Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathy;
- Board eligible (completed residency) or board certified in one of the following specialty areas:
Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, or Preventive Medicine; - Proof of board eligibility or certification and a valid DEA license must be submitted with the application.
- Ability to provide direct patient care to inmates;
- Knowledgeable in full‑spectrum primary care and office‑based procedures;
- Maintain professionalism in a complex environment;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with stakeholders;
- Reading compliance with the English language and effective communication fluent in English;
- Ability to create accessible documents following plain language guidelines;
- Self‑control and resilience in stressful, potentially violent situations;
- Remain alert, emotionally stable, and mentally resilient under pressure;
- Tolerance to stress, confinement, and high‑stakes interaction.
- Experience providing medical care in a correctional environment;
- Board certified in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine;
- Experience managing chronic medical conditions as a physician.
