PROGRAM OVERVIEWThe Science Analytics and Synthesis (SAS) program supports the USGS Libraries Program, providing a national capability to support the scientific research of the USGS and, by extension, the geosciences community and the public. The library’s multi-disciplinary collection comprises more than 1,500,000 volumes, 500,000 maps, 30,000 field record files, and 500,000 historical photos. Library services provide comprehensive access to USGS publications, and scientific, geographical, and historical collections in print and electronic formats.
Access services include circulation, document delivery, interlibrary lending and borrowing, patron assistance, scientific records inventory, and digitization of library materials. Technical services process and maintain the library’s collection, including selecting, acquiring, organizing, cataloging, inventorying, preserving, and preparing materials for circulation. Library infrastructure includes the online library catalog (ExLibris Alma), library search and discovery (ExLibris Primo), the USGS Publications Warehouse, electronic subscriptions and literature search databases (Scopus, Web of Science, Geo Ref), digitization services, and Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery through the OCLC network.
- Use of library catalog for search and ability to understand bibliographic records
- Understanding of library circulation operations
- Familiarity or knowledge of Interlibrary loan processes
- Ability to operate multi-function devices for scanning, printing, and copying materials
- Ability to shelve books, maps, and special library materials following the USGS classification system
- Ability to navigate publishing platforms and literature databases to retrieve scientific journal articles
- Monitoring the circulation desk and circulating library materials
- Providing basic patron assistance in use of the library
- Maintaining patron account records
- Shelving and pulling library maps and publications
- Assisting with interlibrary lending and borrowing
- Scanning materials documents, books, and maps, for patron delivery
- Processing materials into and out of the collection
- Editing library holdings records
- Preparing and receiving materials shipments
- Preparing inventories of archival materials
- Use the library ILS to check-out and check-in library materials to USGS library patrons
- Add and maintain USGS Library borrower account records
- Respond to patron requests regarding status of materials
- Pull library materials in response to patron requests and refile materials after use
- Package materials for mailing to patron and process mail for library returns
- Assist with interlibrary lending and borrowing operations
- Scan materials and add basic metadata for electronic delivery to patrons
- Process materials into and out of the collection
- Inventory scientific archival records
- Maintain a safe and secure library
- Assist patrons with basic library use and refer patrons to staff contacts as appropriate
- Minimum of two (2) weeks annual paid time off.
