About the Division of Youth Services

The Division of Youth Services (DYS) provides a continuum of residential and non‑residential services that encompass juvenile detention, commitment, and parole. DYS is the agency statutorily mandated to provide care and supervision of youth committed by the District Court to the custody of the Colorado Department of Human Services. The Division operates fifteen secure facilities that serve youth between the ages of 10 and 21 who are pre‑adjudicated, sentenced, or committed.

It also contracts with private residential and non‑residential providers throughout the state.

Summary of this position

This work unit provides academic, vocational, and workforce readiness education in conjunction with life‑skills and social‑emotional learning to youth in institutional facilities. The teacher will deliver classroom instruction in English Language Arts and Humanities related subjects, including Social‑Emotional Learning topics, to committed youth in a safe, trauma‑informed environment.

Primary

Job Duties
  • Classroom Teacher – Establishes and maintains an appropriate classroom setting through effective classroom management skills and engagement strategies, including PBIS. Assesses students, prepares aligned lesson plans, and implements varied assessment tools.
  • Meetings, Professional Development, and Progress Monitoring – Meets with Central Education Office members, principals, treatment providers, and other teachers to review progress and align plans. Participates in professional development and applies learning consistently.
  • Supportive to Culture and Safety of Facility – Assists in safety and security by supervising residents and providing immediate assistance. Follows division policies, uses Motivational Interviewing, the Sanctuary Model, and restorative justice language.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education and License Requirement
    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in education or a related field.
    • Current, valid Initial or Professional Teacher license issued by the Colorado Department of Education.
  • Substitutions
    • Current, valid Colorado Adult Basic Education Authorization, Initial Special Services, or Special Services license substitutes for the Colorado Initial or Professional Teacher license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with at‑risk or adjudicated youth.
  • Proficient use of assessment data to inform instructional practice.
  • Experience building a program.
  • Relevant years of state service.

  • Experience with implementing articulated systems and structures with fidelity.
  • Knowledge of classroom‑based behavioral interventions.
  • Able to build rapport with students while maintaining boundaries.
  • Experience with urban and at‑risk populations.
  • Secondary school experience.
  • Educational and training expertise.
  • Interpersonal and oral communication skills.
  • Problem sensitivity and solving.
  • Ability to adhere to safety and security protocols.
  • Technology‑enhanced instruction.
Highly Desirable Knowledge,

  • Knowledge of Colorado Academic Standards for K-12 education.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Strong decision‑making skills and follow‑through.
  • Ability to interact professionally with administrators, staff, parents, clients, community members, and the judicial system.
  • Ability to collaboratively problem‑solve, seek feedback, and create a positive culture and climate.

  • Full background check, including CBI name check, fingerprint check, ICON Colorado court database, Medicare fraud database, reference checks, professional license verification, drug screen, PREA, Trails, and CAPS as applicable.
  • Must be 21 years old or older.
  • State of Colorado residency required at application and throughout employment.
