Position Overview

This classroom teacher position is open exclusively to Colorado state residents. The teacher will provide academic, vocational, and workforce‑readiness instruction in English Language Arts, Humanities, Social‑Emotional Learning (SEL), and related subjects to committed youth within DYS facilities. The role requires a trauma‑informed, safe, and inclusive learning environment and collaboration with other state and community agencies.

Primary

Job Duties
  • Establish and maintain a structured classroom environment, using effective management and engagement strategies, including PBIS and behavior tools.
  • Assess new and continuing students through multiple assessment methods and document learning evidence.
  • Develop unit and daily lesson plans aligned with state standards, incorporating research‑based strategies and technology instruction.
  • Implement varied assessment tools to evaluate student progress against standards-based expectations.
  • Maintain accurate instructional records in IC and/or Trails, meeting all deadlines.
  • Substitute in other classrooms as required, applying the same instructional framework and assessment practices.
  • Collaborate with Central Education Office members, treatment providers, and colleagues to review student progress and align instructional objectives with school development plans.
  • Participate in professional development, safety training, and multidisciplinary team meetings (MDT). Use data, MTSS processes, and progress monitoring to support student learning.
  • Assist with facility safety and security, supervising residents as needed and following DYS policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to trauma‑informed culture, Motivational Interviewing, Sanctuary Model, Restorative Justice language, and Code of Conduct.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Current, valid initial or professional teacher license issued by the Colorado Department of Education.
  • Alternatives:
    Colorado Adult Basic Education Authorization, Initial Special Services, or Special Services license may substitute for the teacher license.
  • Minimum required age is 21 years.
  • Must be a resident of Colorado at the time of application and for the duration of employment.
  • Valid, non‑restricted Colorado driver’s license and ability to travel to training and shadowing events across the state, including Denver.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with at‑risk or adjudicated youth.
  • Proficient use of assessment data to inform instructional practice.
  • Experience building educational programs.
  • Relevant years of state service.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Implementation of articulated systems and fidelity to instructional models.
  • Understanding of classroom‑based behavioral interventions.
  • Ability to build rapport while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Experience with urban and at‑risk populations.
  • Secondary school teaching experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral communication, and oral comprehension skills.
  • Problem‑solving and technology‑enhanced instruction proficiency.
  • Adherence to safety and security protocols.
Highly Desirable Skills
  • Knowledge of Colorado Academic Standards for K‑12 education.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) with attention to detail.
  • Strong decision‑making and follow‑through abilities.
  • Positive, professional interaction with administrators, staff, parents, clients, community members, and the judicial system.
  • Collaborative problem‑solving, openness to feedback, and culture‑building skills.
Conditions of Employment
  • Full background check including CBI name check, fingerprint check, court databases, Medicare fraud database, reference checks, professional license verification, drug screen, and PREA. Trails check for child contact; CAPS check for adult contact at specified facilities.
  • Mandatory completion of DYS Pre‑service Training Academy, Field Training Program (FTO), and annual subject‑area training.
