Overview

Adjunct Instructor, Graduate School of Social Work – University of Denver. This posting covers multiple openings across the GSSW MSW Programs for the  academic year, including in-person and online teaching opportunities in Denver, Durango, and Glenwood Springs.

Essential Functions
  • In addition to University policies, perform principal responsibilities, including but not limited to the following:
    Separate trainings for new faculty and technology (e.g., MSW@Denver) may be required.
  • Teach course in the assigned modality per program and course schedule once or twice a week, depending on the course.
  • Prepare and maintain the learning management system (Canvas) course container.
  • Prepare for teaching by attending course onboarding, reviewing readings, and becoming familiar with course learning objectives, assessments, and asynchronous/synchronous activities.
  • Meet with students as needed and respond to inquiries within 2 business days.
  • Assign and explain expectations for papers, exams, and other deliverables.
  • Grade and provide timely feedback on assignments.
  • Support collection of evaluative feedback through mid-quarter and end-of-quarter/final course evaluations.
  • Attend quarterly course-specific or program-specific and bi-annual academic affairs virtual meetings.
Ad Hoc Course Coordination or Development – Additional Responsibilities
  • Assist with course revisions and iterations; gather input with lead faculty and section instructors.
  • Answer questions about course content to support section faculty during the quarter.
  • Facilitate start-of-quarter welcome meetings with instructors for the given course.
  • Assist with technical fixes in the learning management system (e.g., links, content).
  • Work with lead faculty to develop course content and learning activities as needed.
Overload Faculty – Additional Responsibilities
  • Consult with supervisor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs to confirm availability to teach above standard workload.
  • Teach additional courses at overload pay rate, following the essential functions above.
Substitute Faculty Pool
  • Provide substitute coverage as needed; complete quarterly survey to indicate availability by program, modality, course, and time.
  • Monitor and respond to email requests for substitute coverage that match survey responses.
  • Coordinate with the instructor of record on objectives, activities, and assessment.
  • Substitute teach the required class session and provide follow-up updates on hours worked.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Exceptional communication skills in reading, drafting, and editing documents; effective written and verbal communication with adult learners.
  • Basic mathematical proficiency; strong interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and prioritize to meet deadlines.
  • Experience with computer applications including Microsoft Office, Zoom, internet and email; willingness to upgrade skills.
  • Ability to articulate teaching approaches used in professional graduate education programs.
  • Strong Microsoft Office Suite skills (Word, Excel, Outlook) and a commitment to inclusion in higher education.
  • Strong attention to detail and customer service orientation; ability to operate within a large university setting across faculty and administrative roles.
Required Qualifications
  • Master's Degree for courses categorized as theory, research, policy, or values.
  • Any “practice” course in the MSW curriculum requires a Master of Social Work (MSW) and two years post-MSW practice experience.
  • Successful facilitation experiences for adult learners in trainings, groups, or teaching.
  • Qualified applicants must have United States work eligibility and reside and work within the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master of Social Work (MSW).
Work Schedule

The university’s administrative offices are open Monday–Friday, 8:00 am–4:30 pm. Faculty schedules vary by term and depend on courses taught, service commitments, and research. The registrar’s schedule is available online.

Working Environment
  • Programs may be virtual, campus-based, or distance-based.
