Position Summary

This role will support grades 9-12 at Sheridan High School / SOAR Academy for the  school year. The educator must believe that all students can reach their highest potential and should be a collaborative staff member eager to learn and grow while supporting students.

General Responsibilities
  • Strong knowledge of content areas, teaching methods, learning styles, and educational research related to learners with all types of special needs.
  • Prefer experience with co‑teaching.
  • Strong classroom management, communication, organization, and planning skills.
  • Experience developing and implementing individualized education programs (IEPs).
  • Knowledge of formal and informal diagnostic assessments for students with a variety of learning difficulties.
  • Demonstrate knowledge in literacy and numeracy intervention programs.
  • Experience in administration and interpretation of standardized and informal special education assessments.
  • Demonstrate problem‑solving skills through collaborative work with students, teachers, parents, and administrators.
  • Collaborate in teaching teams to design curriculum and assessments.
  • Experience managing cases with regular communication with parents and faculty.
  • Ability to align curriculum and assessments with Colorado Content Standards.
  • Positively impact achievement and differentiate instruction based on the needs of the students.
  • Specific Responsibilities
  • Provide a responsible diagnostic and prescriptive program for students in alignment with special education law and MTSS.
  • Assess and evaluate students referred for possible special education services to determine eligibility and identify strengths and weaknesses.
  • Work in an instructional capacity through collaborative practices with general education teachers in a co‑teaching setting.
  • Consult with parents and provide consultation services to the classroom teacher and other related service team members in areas of student need.
  • Act as a team member, attending IEP meetings and staffings designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
  • Advocate for children with educational disabilities in community and parent group meetings.
  • Supervise the work of the assistant and volunteers assigned to the program.
  • Provide in‑service workshops for teachers and staff during the school year.
  • Evaluate the progress of students.
  • Complete all necessary forms and records required by Sheridan School District 2 and the Colorado Department of Education.
  • Participate in workshops for professional growth.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or Special Education Director in accordance with district policies.
  • Required Licensure
  • The Special Education Teacher must hold a valid Colorado license with Special Education endorsement.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited university or college.
  • Completed a state‑approved Teacher Preparation Program, participation in a Teacher in Residence Program, or participation in an Alternative Teacher License program.

    Physical Requirements

    The job requires lifting up to 50 pounds, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, fine‑finger dexterity, oral and auditory capacity for interpersonal interaction, and frequent movement between locations to meet students’ and staff’s needs.

    Must clear a background check through the CBI and the FBI via fingerprint submission.
