General

Summary

This position works collaboratively with other mathematics faculty and instructors in a diverse, urban setting and reports directly to the co‑chairs of the mathematics department. Effective interpersonal, leadership, and organizational skills are essential. CCD seeks faculty with strong teaching skills to engage its diverse students using an array of instructional methods and tools (project‑based learning, flipped classroom, innovative use of technology, implementation of open educational resources, competency‑based education, etc.).

The college encourages creativity and supports faculty to implement cutting‑edge methods to improve student learning.

Duties and Responsibilities Primary Duties

The primary duty for this position is teaching mathematics from the developmental level through differential equations, and a full course load equals 18 work units (equivalent to 15 lecture credits) per semester. Faculty must demonstrate commitment to student success beyond the classroom and devote some professional time to service activities in the college as part of shared governance. The position is 9‑month contractual, paid over 12 months, and may offer additional assignments for pay during non‑contractual days.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with other mathematics faculty to:

Teaching‑Related
  • Deliver content and facilitate student learning of assigned courses in a dynamic environment that engages students
  • Design and update class websites on the college’s learning management system with the assistance of the department’s course captains
  • Evaluate student mastery of course content by conducting regular assessments and providing timely feedback
  • Maintain accurate student records
  • Be available outside of the classroom for student meetings
  • Utilize retention strategies to maximize student success
  • Engage in department and college responsibilities and initiatives, including efforts to maintain departmental coherence across CCD’s many instructional venues (on campus, online asynchronously or synchronously, hybrid, hyflex, and/or concurrent enrollment)
Service‑Related
  • Attend department, pathway, college, and system‑wide meetings
  • Serve on department, pathway, college, and system‑wide committees
  • Participate in required professional development
  • Contribute to the professional development of adjunct instructors (hiring, mentoring, observing in classrooms, etc.)
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications Education (Required)
  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, mathematics education, actuarial science, applied mathematics, computer science, data science, economics, engineering, operational research, physics, or another related field
Education (Required) for Advanced Courses
  • Master’s degree in mathematics or statistics
  • Any master’s degree with a combination of 18 graduate credits in mathematics and/or statistics
Experience (Required)
  • Tested professional experience: a bachelor’s degree in any field and at least 4000 hours within the last 7 years of substantial work and ongoing engagement in mathematics or statistics (certification, consultation, research, publications, conference presentations, curriculum development, teaching, training, etc.)
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (Required)
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint, etc.)
  • Proficiency with web conferencing platforms (Teams, Zoom, Webex, etc.)
