Artist in Residence Assistant

Under the general supervision of the Visual Arts Coordinator the employee will perform a variety of coordinating and oversight duties for the Art Heritage Program. This position is often the point of contact for Program activities and lesson plans and must work with staff, community members, students, and parent volunteers to facilitate these interactions.

Essential duties and responsibilities include managing the Artist in Residence and Art Heritage Program's supplies and resources for each elementary school, researching and designing art project lessons, coordinating and instructing classroom volunteers, assisting with soliciting and managing art supply donations, and performing other related duties as assigned.

Education and related work experience:
High school diploma required with a minimum of one-year classroom experience as a volunteer and/or aide preferred. Preference given for experience and/or educational courses in art history, drawing, printing, color theory, watercolor painting, and ceramics. Experience as a working artist is very desirable.

Technical skills, knowledge, and abilities include exceptional oral communication and phone etiquette skills in English, ability to use Spanish oral communication skills is desirable, exceptional customer service, public relations, and interpersonal relationship building skills, proficient knowledge of State Visual Arts Standards, basic professional written communication skills, strong organizational and time-management skills handling multiple priorities, ability to apply a basic knowledge and understanding of children's developmental abilities for art skills, ability to apply a basic knowledge of art elements and design including line, shape, composition, critique etc.,

ability to adapt art lessons for students with specific challenges, visual, physical, etc., ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job; especially related to student issues, ability to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills, ability to manage multiple priorities and frequent interruptions in a timely manner, ability to be adaptable and flexible with critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities, ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, building and department procedures, ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people and students from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds, ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator, operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals, operating knowledge of and experience with office software such as word processing, spreadsheets, and email, operating knowledge of and experience with typical office equipment, such as copier, scanner, fax machine, etc.
