The Career Advisor provides direct comprehensive career services for undergraduate students and first‑year alumni. The Advisor is the primary liaison to the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM) and the Ritchie School of Engineering & Computer Science (ECS), with a primary responsibility to NSM. The Advisor partners closely with the Associate Director of CPD to develop and implement career programming and events, including new initiatives, to grow student engagement.
The Advisor presents career education concepts in classes, student organization meetings, and other campus‑wide requests. The role promotes inclusion values in student professional development and employer relationship management.
- Provide comprehensive career development to individuals and groups of undergraduate students and recent alumni in STEM majors.
- Serve as a Career Advisor Liaison to the 1
GenU program; provide presentations and events to support program students. - Deliver one‑on‑one career advising through in‑person, phone, and virtual appointments, including resume/CV/cover‑letter reviews, internship/job search strategy, informational interviews, networking guidance, interview practice, coaching, and salary/offer negotiation assistance.
- Apply a market‑based approach to career planning and advising, understanding the degrees and programs in the assigned area.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships and communication with the student population, college faculty, staff, and administration.
- Accurately track student interactions and engagement in CPD’s career management system (PCO).
- Use engagement data in Tableau to develop reports for department leadership and develop a strategy to increase student engagement.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate career education presentations, programs, and events (e.g., alumni networking, panels, webinars).
- Collaborate with alumni engagement, employer connections, and advancement marketing teams to create and disseminate marketing materials and promote events.
- Act as a mentor to the Peer Advisor Program and to graduate student employees serving STEM students.
- Model “One DU” leadership and foster collaborative career and professional development practices.
- Strong service orientation, excellent interpersonal and advising skills, and sensitivity to diverse populations.
- Knowledge of career development challenges and opportunities for undergraduate students and first‑year alumni.
- Cultural competency and effective cross‑cultural communication.
- Ability to analyze employment trends impacting assigned student populations and to understand local, national, and international job markets.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including strong spelling and grammar for feedback on cover letters, resumes, and networking communications.
- Familiarity with a range of career assessment instruments.
- Ability to partner with faculty, staff, and alumni to develop innovative career programs.
- Desire to define problems, establish facts, and provide solutions.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education or work experience (Veterans may substitute with military certification).
- Two years of related professional experience in developing and planning programs, career advising, or coaching.
- Master’s degree, preferably in higher education, counseling, or an industry‑related field.
- Experience in higher education or a similar complex environment such as the military, government, or non‑profits.
- Experience developing and planning career‑related programs.
- Experience working with college students or other job seekers.
- Experience teaching or assisting with career courses or similar student success courses.
- Experience using personal branding techniques (resumes, cover letters, Linked In, interview preparation).
