The Student Engagement and Leadership Development business unit within the Division of Student Affairs serves as the University of Denver’s central hub for co-curricular learning, leadership development, and campus life, advancing the University’s 4-Dimensional Experience for undergraduate, graduate, post-traditional, and veteran students. Through New Student & Family Programs, Driscoll & Community Commons Student Center Operations, Student Leadership, Volunteerism & Development, Student Activities & Organizations, FIRST@DU, Post-Traditional & Veteran Student Services, Student Engagement fosters intellectual growth through experiential learning, well‑being through connection and belonging, character through leadership, civic engagement, and values‑based involvement, and career-readiness through skill development and applied leadership experiences.
The department supports registered student organizations, Fraternity & Sorority Life, student government, and large-scale programs and University Hallmark events, while providing intentional advisement, transition support, and leadership education that empower students – especially those navigating non‑traditional pathways, work, family, or military service—to build transferable skills, find purpose, and fully engage in campus life at DU.
The Graduate Student Coordinator for First-Generation Parent and Family Engagement serves as a member of the Student Engagement & Leadership (SEL) team and supports the University of Denver’s commitment to first-generation student success. This position focuses on developing meaningful relationships with parents, families, and supporters of first-generation students through communication, educational resources, and engagement opportunities.
Supervision & TrainingWorking closely with New Student and Family Programs (NSFP), FIRST @ DU, and campus partners, the Graduate Student Coordinator will help create a welcoming and supportive experience for first-generation families while enhancing their understanding of university resources, student development, and the college transition process.
Onboarding will include a combination of self-guided online modules and in-person starting with NSFP, FIRST@DU, and other Student Engagement and Leadership (SEL) staff. Training will be ongoing after start date. Regular work schedule will be set by the employee and supervisor. Monday-Friday 8:00-4:30pm. Signature event and programming support will required occasional evening and weekend hours. Work hours will not exceed 20 hours per week.
Essential Functions:- Collaborate with New Student and Family Programs (NSFP) and FIRST @ DU to identify, plan, and implement opportunities for first-generation family engagement during campus-wide programs and events.
- Develop and maintain content for the DU Family Portal, newsletters, social media channels, and other communication platforms.
- Create and implement a comprehensive communication strategy for first-generation parents and family members throughout the academic year.
- Design, coordinate, and facilitate programs, workshops, and engagement opportunities tailored to the unique experiences of first-generation families.
- Research and develop educational resources that help families better understand the student experience, campus resources, and ways to support student success.
- Collect and assess program feedback, engagement metrics, and participation data to inform future initiatives and continuous improvement efforts.
- Assist with family engagement efforts during New Student Orientation, Family Weekend, and other key university events.
- Complete additional projects and duties that support the mission and goals of Student Engagement & Leadership and first‑generation student initiatives.
