Science / Math Peer Tutor

Position Type: Workstudy

College: Community College of Denver

Division: Academic Affairs

Department: CCD Student Learning Support (EXCEL! Zone)

Campus: Auraria Campus

Location: Denver

Salary Range:19.29

The EXCEL! Zone is the Community College of Denver (CCD) tutoring center, offering support in math and science, writing, and digital literacy. Math and science tutors at the EXCEL! Zone assist students in a variety of college-level mathematics and science courses via in-person and remote sessions.

We are currently hiring work-study tutors for all math and science subjects, and are specifically seeking candidates with a strong knowledge of biology and/or chemistry. However, all candidates with a strong math or science background are encouraged to apply.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Work with students in the EXCEL! Zone’s drop-in tutoring center, offering one-on-one or small group support in mathematical and/or scientific concepts. Tutors may work with students from any CCD math or science course, as well as students from other Auraria campus institutions.
  • Provide in-class support for CCD’s High School Diploma Program (HSDP) for adult learners. In this setting, tutors will work with students in the classroom, following the instructor’s direction.
  • Provide online tutoring sessions via Web Ex video conferencing.
  • Interact professionally with students and staff from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds.
  • Develop students’ critical thinking skills through guided learning and best tutoring practices.
  • Continuously develop and improve their own tutoring strategies and techniques, and commit to ongoing professional growth.
  • Collaborate with individuals from diverse backgrounds including those with a disability and members of racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and LGBTQ communities.
  • Adhere to confidential information policies.
  • Host reviews and workshops for larger groups in specific classes during their regular shift(s).
Competencies/KSAs
  • Confidence in pre-algebra and college algebra.
  • Confidence in at least one of the following subjects at a college level: biology, chemistry, physics, statistics, mathematics at or above calculus 1.
  • The ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and in a timely manner.
  • Familiarity with D2L, Web Ex, Microsoft Teams, and Outlook (or willingness to learn).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Enrollment at CCD in at least six credit hours for the Fall 2026 semester.
  • A work-study award for Fall 2026.
  • Evidence of mathematical and/or scientific knowledge via the completion of math and science classes with high grades (A or

B), or via other official means.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience tutoring students or working in a classroom.
  • Experience working in an urban majority-minority college.
  • Knowledge of a second language and/or experience working with students whose first language is not English.
Tutors will
  • Reinforce their own content knowledge, preparing them for academic success in their field.
  • Learn teaching and tutoring strategies, with the opportunity to learn from experienced tutors.
  • Learn peer mentoring skills by working directly with other CCD students in similar programs.
  • Any area of study in the STEM pathway fits well with this position. Degrees in nursing, radiologic technology, and related fields apply as well.
  • Students in these academic areas will be able to access tutoring services provided by the work-study tutors. This benefits students because they receive extra academic help; it benefits faculty and programs because they will have additional resources to provide to their students.
  • Tutors will have work experience related to their field of choice. This benefits STEM programs because it enhances tutors' professional and academic portfolios upon graduation, increasing their chances of receiving internships, jobs, or acceptance into rigorous four-year degrees.
