This position is only open to Colorado state residents.

  • New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

About the Position

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has a position for an Engineer-In-Training I in Region 1 Traffic and Safety assisting with projects to analyze, evaluate, and design the professional traffic engineering plan and functions. Under the supervision and guidance of a licensed Professional Engineer, this positions will apply and implement engineering theories, principles, and standards to highway projects. The positions will carry out established work processes and operations pertaining to either design or construction inspection on transportation projects and learn to take on progressively more complex assignments requiring independent engineering judgment.

duties and responsibilities
  • Learn to utilize traffic engineering fundamentals, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Standard Specifications, M&S Standards, and other industry-accepted procedures to develop plan sheets and estimate traffic-related material quantities with basic guidance.
  • Learn to identify design problems related to actual field conditions encountered.
  • Learn to develop traffic engineering plans and construction traffic control plans of all types, from simple to complex projects, from start to finish.
  • Learn how to request field surveys, environmental studies, traffic data, ROW information, hydrology/hydraulic design, structural design, utility locations/relocations, and other information as required.
  • Learn to develop traffic signal and ramp meter timing plans utilizing various types of engineering software to optimize progression of traffic flow on state highways.
  • Streamline the resulting outputs and review before/after implementation performance to ensure operational improvements.
  • Attend design plan review meetings for CDOT projects to learn and develop the ability to provide data-driven input on traffic trends and flow.
  • Learn to ensure the accuracy of information and work with the Region 1 Business Office to ensure any problems are handled effectively.
  • Assist in the creation of formatted reports that adhere to CDOT specifications as outlined by management.

Work Environment
  • Your schedule will primarily be 8:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday, with the opportunity for a flexible schedule
  • Required to work nights and weekends as needed in response to workload or contractor hours
