Job Description

At Olsson, we help clients navigate complex regulatory landscapes with ease, ensuring proactive compliance with key environmental laws such as the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, and National Historic Preservation Act. Our approach leverages the latest methods to protect natural resources while enabling transportation projects to achieve their goals.

As a Senior Environmental Scientist, you will manage projects, collaborate with regulators—state departments of transportation, environmental quality, the FHWA, USACE, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service—and coordinate with clients and team members. You will mentor colleagues, lead client and regulatory meetings, and drive the delivery of high‑quality environmental documentation.

Primary Responsibilities
  • National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA): Lead and develop transportation NEPA documentation, including Categorical Exclusion, Environmental Assessment, Environmental Impact Statement. Interface with federal and state agencies (e.g., lead federal agency, SHPO, USACE, USFWS) to secure reviews and guidance, and coordinate across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Coordinate with clients, agencies, and stakeholders during transportation project development and NEPA processes. Support public‑facing project discussions and communicate environmental considerations to multidisciplinary teams and project partners.
  • Collaboration and Interdisciplinary Work: Work with design engineers and planning teams to integrate environmental considerations into transportation project development and delivery.
  • Project Management: Oversee NEPA for transportation projects from initiation to completion, managing timelines, budgets, and deliverables, and coordinating with subconsultants, clients, and agencies.
  • Technical Coordination: Interpret transportation design plans and technical studies (noise, air quality, traffic, drainage, alternatives analyses) to identify environmental risks, support NEPA documentation, and coordinate permitting and agency review processes.

You bring to the team:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, urban planning, or a related biological or scientific discipline
  • 10 years of environmental experience
  • 5 years of transportation project experience
  • Project‑management aptitude to ensure oversight and compliance with environmental regulations
  • Strong written communication skills for producing high‑quality reports, memos, and documentation
  • Self‑direction, reliability, and strong follow‑through on deadlines and deliverables

Compensation
: $80,000 – $140,000 USD. Actual compensation will vary based on experience, qualifications, location, skills, education, and internal equity.
