Environmental Engineer - Entry to Junior
Position Summary The selected candidate will join a growing and energetic team supporting environmental projects in the Rocky Mountain region of the U.S. This is a great opportunity to be involved in all facets of environmental management.
Essential Job Functions (Required)- Support and lead field work for Federal and Private clients.
- Provide technical support to a long-term U.S. Environmental Protection Agency contract in the areas of site investigation, Brownfields redevelopment, removal assessment, data management, and emergency response.
- Work includes a broad range of site types from abandoned properties to mine sites, industrial/commercial facilities, orphaned wells, and spills with locations across Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming.
- Oversee and conduct multi-media sampling, field audits and inspections; use a range of field monitoring equipment; organize and review data; prepare reports and maps; review files; collect air monitoring data; provide training and exercise support; oversee contractors; manage tasks and projects; and provide related services.
- Perform tasks across multiple disciplines to bring about successful project completion.
- Demonstrate full knowledge of each project’s status and goals.
- Emergency response work includes mobilizing to spill or response sites and working with EPA and other parties to support air monitoring, sampling, communications support, and data management.
- B.S./B.A. degree in Environmental Engineering or other related field.
- 0-5 years of relevant experience in environmental consulting.
- Ability to respond quickly during periodic on-call support, up to two weeks per month.
- Ability to travel, including overnight and weekends.
- Demonstrated ability to organize, coordinate, analyze, and present technical material.
- Excellent writing skills that include the ability to read and assimilate technical and scientific information.
- Ability to learn quickly and multitask.
- Highly motivated, customer focused.
- Work well in a team environment.
- Ability to work independently and under direct on-site supervision.
- Ability to manage a heavy workload.
- Excellent communication, client interaction, and organizational skills.
- Strong educational and work foundation.
- Driving on a regular basis; passing a motor vehicle record background check and maintaining a valid driver’s license and good driving record is required.
- Passing a criminal background check.
- Current Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
- 40-hour OSHA HAWOPER training.
- Completion of ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 training.
- Hydrogeological investigations.
- Hazardous materials surveys (including asbestos, lead-based paint).
- Analytical data using spreadsheets and databases.
- Conceptual remedial action plans and remedial cost estimates.
- Phase I ESAs to ASTM or higher standards.
- Phase II ESAs.
- Mastery with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) is strongly desired.
- Fluency in Spanish (spoken and written) is preferred but not required.
This position requires roughly 50% travel to support environmental emergency response situations throughout the Mountain Region, on short notice, where the applicant will be a part of field teams and provide technical support to EPA personnel at a range of site investigation and response sites.
Physical Requirements (Required)- Walk on uneven terrain.
- Lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
- Wear and work in an air purifying respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
- Work periodic long days, including 12+ hours, especially when in the field, including evenings and weekends.
- Work outside in all weather conditions, both hot and cold and inclement weather.
- Work around or with chemical and biological hazards.
- Drive on a regular basis; passing a motor vehicle record background check and maintaining a valid driver’s license and good driving record is required.
