Senior Plumbing Specialist – Denver, Colorado

At HDR, we are looking for a Senior Plumbing Specialist to join our Building Engineering Services team in Denver, Colorado. The role involves designing plumbing systems for a variety of projects including Science & Technology, Industrial, Aerospace, and Federal. The candidate will mentor and train junior designers while delivering technically excellent design solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Mentoring/Managing:
    • Help grow a team that works together to create a collaborative environment that promotes career growth, high‑quality construction documents, client satisfaction, and a supportive safety net.
    • Coordinate the work of Plumbing Engineers, EITs, and BIM Specialists with the rest of the multidisciplinary team throughout the project lifecycle.
    • Mentor, organize, and facilitate the growth of junior staff.
    • Coordinate workload to complete documents on schedule.
  • Technical:
    • Assume a substantial role in plumbing design for projects.
    • Work with clients to understand project‑specific requirements around reliability, growth increments, cost considerations, sustainability, construction schedules, and future flexibility.
    • Provide detailed design and coordination with multidisciplinary team members.
    • Attend design meetings and lead plumbing discussions.
    • Conduct schematic, design development, and construction document work sessions with the Project Manager, Project Architect, and other disciplines.
    • Produce code‑conforming designs and participate in reviews with governing agencies for code compliance.
    • Support construction through field observations, submittal and shop drawing review, and RFI support.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
  • Travel:
    Some travel to job sites or other HDR offices may be required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Minimum of 10 years of consulting engineering experience designing high‑reliability plumbing systems.
  • Ability to take ownership of assignments and work independently and as part of a large project team.
  • Strong desire to stay current with trends in project market sectors.
  • Working knowledge of Bluebeam Revu, Revit, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Working knowledge of Newforma Project Center and/or Project Wise Document Management Software.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Strong professional initiative.
  • Focused on client outcomes.
  • Knowledge of current industry codes and standards.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Technical and specification writing skills.
  • Certified Plumbing Designer (CPD) preferred.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in engineering or related field of study or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of 15 years of engineering experience in the discipline.
  • Aptitude and hands‑on experience with computer applications specific to plumbing engineering.
  • Extensive knowledge of industry standards specific to plumbing engineering.
  • Proven ability to work in multidisciplinary environments.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment and active participation in HDR’s employee‑owned culture.
Professional Development
  • Active participation in industry organizations is encouraged.
  • Participation in professional development seminars, workshops, or conferences is encouraged and must be approved in advance.
  • Maintain continuing education requirements for any certification or license.
